SPEEDOMETER SENDING UNIT BAD?
Can anyone explain how to find, where to find, and how to change the speedo sending unit on a 1988 911? I know it is on the left side of the tranny but do I put it on a rack or just use a jack etc. Pics would be a big help. The part is only $75, so unless it is a job best left to the pros I would like to give it a try. Thanks

OK, maybe this will help someone with this problem. I have an '88 and beat my head against a wall trying to figure out why my speedo stopped. It checked out fine but would not work even with a NEW sending unit. Turns out on my particular car I have FOUR, not eight, magnets on the little aluminum wheel inside the tranny. On top of this, the sending unit only works if you insert it about halfway in the hole on the driver side of the tranny. I found this out by accident and had to fabricate something from an old piece of heater tube that would keep the sensor only partially inserted. I s/w the tech at Pelican Parts who confirmed there was only one part for my car...no mid year changes.

Mine stopped working suddenly and I assumed it was the speedo itself. Sent the speedo to a company in Austin and they confirmed it was working fine. I started digging around and then decided to order the new sending unit since I did not really know what else to try. After I installed it I noticed it was not working and was tinkering around trying to see what the problem was. That's when I determined I only had 4 magnets and also that the sending unit only worked when it was inserted about halfway into the mounting hole. If it goes all the way in it appears it's just "past" the magnets and does not work.
