OK I give up - where's the dipstick?
I just bought my first Porsche, a 78 SC coupe. Love the car, but it came without a user manual. Maybe I'm blind, but I've looked all over the engine compartment and cannot find the oil dipstick. I've also searched this forum and perused The Essential 911SC book. Can someone give me a hint?

Hi:
You REALLY need an owner's manual for all the good & critical information these have in them. Look on E-bay for one.
The dipstick can be found under the oil tank cap inside the engine compartment on the right side. Remember,...these are dry-sump engines and one can only accurately check the oil unless the engine idling on level ground at full operating temperatures.

Dont worry dude - I looked at my engine for what seemed like an hour before I found it. The next crazy thing is checking the oil when the car is running and at operation temp. Also your oil gauge is not accurate when you driving it so dont freak out when its in the red when your driving. Only accurate when at temp and at idle. You might pay close to 100 bucks for a owners manual but before you do that buy a Bentley manual - its like 600 pages and will cover WAY more than the manual. Just my opinion. Heres one for your car on ebay.

Man, this forum is the best! Thanks for your help. I'm shopping now for the owners manual. It looks like books4cars.com can get original copies for reasonable cost. The one on Ebay for 110 bucks seems a little steep. It took me awhile to figure out if DRUCK PRESS was oil pressure, vacuum, or what (like my 1991 318IS's gas mileage gauge), and what OEL was showing, as it moves around so much.
I'll post some photos soon. I'm so excited!

This is the best place to find manual: http://www.books4cars.com/
I saw a '78 owners manual there for $39.95.

p.s. You thought the dipstick was hard, just wait until next winter when you want the windshield defrosted and your feet warm at the same time!

Yeah, why is the ignition on the left, anyway?
I had to take down the sides of my running shoes on the belt sander so I could get my foot off the gas and onto the brake.

Why on the left you ask?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/24_hours_of_Le_Mans
"The Le Mans start is also the reason why left-hand-drive Porsche street cars continue to have their ignition switches on the left of the steering column rather than on the more customary location of the right-side: this enabled the driver to start the engine with left hand while engaging the 1st gear with the right hand, depressing the clutch with left foot and stepping on the gas with right foot simultaneously thus allowing the Porsche to get off the starting line more quickly than other race cars."

James,
I remember being 10 or so and letting a guy know at a Porsche event that his 911 was leaking radiator fluid. The whole group burst out laughing at me, I am shocked I am not messed up for life and still involved in Porsches. Welcome to the board Phiba. Don't be affraid to ask any question.
