Anybody know what color Steve McQueen's 911s was?
Niate wants to paint his 911s and I recommended the color of Steve McQueen's 911s in the beginning of LeMans. Dose anybody know what color that was. I know it was a rare color and not metallic but other than that im in the dark.

Quote from the current owner of the cars website (http://www.petersen.org/)
"1969 Porsche, 911S Coupe, Originally owned by Steve McQueen
Considered one of the most recognizable sports cars in the history of the automobile, the Porsche 911 was powered by a two-liter, air-cooled flat six that gave brisk acceleration. This performance appealed to Steve McQueen, who came to prefer Porsches for many driving situations. Painted medium gray, a color frequently seen on cars owned by McQueen, the 911S was not as conspicuous as other sports cars of the day and attracted less unwanted attention. More than a mere touring car, this example was driven by McQueen’s character in the opening scenes of Le Mans, and was the vehicle that he drove onto the race track that introduced the flashback sequence."

I believe the color number is #6801 Slate Gray/Grey and a special exterior enamel. SCHIEFERGRAU. My car is Schwarzmetallic Color Code #U07 that is much darker. I could be wrong. Took it from a search.

I truly appreciate your input (and iaaaron's posting in the first place). If anyone can offer pictures or links to pictures I'd be tempted to name my firstborn after you. The car is a '71 that was originally an aqua-blue metallic (which is fairly unique and not really what I'm looking for) and has since been three other colors. It needs some TLC including sanding some panels, so I'm laboring to find a color that I can be comfortable with. All the trim is chrome which eliminates silver and some of the lighter colors, so I'm back to greys and dark blues, and the current color which I'm starting to become attached to.
I love the community we have on this board, so your input is desired, and a conclusive call on the color of the LeMans car would be pretty cool too.
Thanks to all!!
Edit: My wife says "there will be no naming the firstborn after somebody on Rennlist, but she's in favor of the gray, given its history."

Yes, but I believe that is what they already did above for you. The first shot appears to have been taken from the movie - note the French cars in the background. The second shot is of a 911 in the Steve McQueen collection currently at the Peterson Automotive museum. It's a great exhibit. I saw it a couple of months ago. I forget if the sign next to that car specifically said it was from the movie.

At the risk of starting an international incident, or at least an unwanted debate, I have my doubts they're the same car. Aside from the colors being noticeably different (which could be attributed to the lighting) the chrome trim on the bumber and the "grill" appear to be different.
That aside, what I was actually hoping for (and did a horrible job requesting) was pics or links to pics with colors and color names. If you do a search on Rennlist, there are numerous threads just debating the myriad of blues offered during this era. And, I've been unable to find anything difinitive on what Gray White, Fortuna Gray or Beige Gray actually look like. I've got a "Red Book," so the color names and codes are readily available (if you ever need one just ask), but what the color ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE seems much harder to nail down. I'll take any and all suggestions. And again, thanks to all!

You will need to have it sprayed on metal using the same manf. AND chemistry... and the same spray gun & pressure and nozzle size...
Then look at it in sun and shade both. Then... you still don't have the same curvature as the panels on the car and don't have the same weathering (if you care about the latter).
The next level down would be a color chip. A paint supplier will have books of these.
Below that ... is looking in a paper brochure or on a computer screen...

I'd contact John Willhoit to see if he'll shoot a sample card of slate grey - he does that as a regular service for people selecting colors for their concours-level 356s, and he is expert on all the issues of chemistry, technique & etc.
