Default My First Shop experience

My '89 Carrera arrived last week from VA - 42 K, fresh PPI, but knew it needed a 45K service, plus a CV boot - Took it to my favorite shop here in Seattle....$1,244.37 later, got it home, only to see the wash guy appears to have sprayed wheel cleaner (Yikes!) on the Fuchs, and forgot to wash it off.... Two hours of cleaning / polishing, and they are back in shape... The other thing that chaps my hide is they informed me I need a cap and rotor - Quoted $100 +13.00 for the parts, which Pelican has listed for $50 + $13,95...Jeez - Who do they think that are, jewelers? I know they need to make a buck, but come on... I said no thanks, even I can change out a cap and rotor w/ my limited mx skills.. The car drives and looks great - I'd love to post a couple pics, but can't seem to figure out how to do it - Maybe when my computer-savvy wife speaks to me again (she's not thrilled w/ my purchase decision), she'll show me how.... The adventure continues!

Randy:

The shop is Fat City in Seattle - I've used them for VW and Audi work in the past, but this is my first P car experience w/ them....I've gotta improve my DIY skills, that's for sure!

The Bentley, Waynes 101, Pelican & Rennlist.

That will solve most (if not all) of your needs.

Finding a good mechanic is almost as hard as finding a good doctor, maybe harder. DIY is the way to go unless you intimidated. Then, you will know it's done right too. Good luck!

Anyone who was capable of building scale models as a kid can learn to remove and replace parts on a car, but quality work only comes from research and experience. When I meet a mechanic I want to hear about their success stories with cars like mine.

Until I'm impressed with them I will only let them perform minor maintenance tasks I could do myself.

You're luclky to be living in Seattle. If I lived there, John Walker would be my first and only choice. Fortunately, I live in Los Angeles and have TRE.
