Records
Greetings,
I'm looking at a nice '89 original 911, but it only has records for the last 8 years. If the PPI passes with flying colors, should I consider purchasing or should I walk?
Thanks, Greg

8 years isn't bad at all. I just bought a 928S based on its condition alone, in spite of it having absolutely no records at all since '92. Two separate shops checked it out thoroughly and both of them said it was the best car they've seen in 10 years. I agree with Quadry, if it passes PPI and there aren't any red flags in the Carfax (which are often incorrect, by the way), then condition and driveability should be the deciding factors.

I'm trying to think how records that are nine or more years old could possibly be useful, outside of a claimed rebuild of the tranny or motor.
A thorough PPI is much more important.

Jack, I think you make a good point, but I also think a more lengthy service history adds to the attractiveness of the car. For instance, I bought my 911 a year ago from the original owner, who saved every receipt (70+) since the car was new, plus the sales brochures and window sticker, bill of sale, registration receipts, emissions reports, etc. There weren't any major repairs or rebuilds done, just normal maintenance. Absolutely none of this stuff serves any practical purpose, except for the last few years of service, but it definitely adds to the coolness factor and will greatly impress a buyer and assure them that the car has received meticulous attention.

It proves to potential buyers that you bothered to maintain the car instead of just owning it.
I'm sure many have purchased Porsches only to find out shortly thereafter how much they can actually cost to maintain. Once they get hit with an estimate for a valve adjustment or clutch repair the reality sets in and they have to sell the car. This situation is what a pile of receipts is helping to avoid, although a PPI is still far more important.
I bought my 84 without any receipts except for an old gas slip & the alarm service record (from 12+ years ago!) in the glovebox. The overall condition and the PPI provided me with enough confidence.

I agree
I have bought cars with no records and cars with all records . It is nice to see the maintenence records which also serve to establish mileage verification . I would be very comfortable with the situation you have outlined if the ppi was good and the condition good as well. It is also true that when you sell the same queastions could come up. But there will be established history with you and the PO. The car I just bought has all books and records and I happen to like that along with the fact that the last owner of 14 years didn't bother to repair a rip in the door seal identifed in the PPI in 1990 . I don't think I will fix it either. I'm gonna drive it.
