Default car polish

Hi

Just wondering what people might be using the detail their car's paint.

I use the Meguiar's Gold Class range - clear coat prep and the Gold Class polish.
Recently I've tried the NXT Generation polish that costs more and is supposed to be their *best* polish. However I've noticed that it doesn't bead/sheet water the same as the Gold Class does. I havent really decided whether it is a better shine.

Also, I was wondering about other products -say Zymol or Swissol. This is generally around 2-3 times the prices of the Meguiars top shelf stuff. Can anyone tell me whether the finish from Zymol wax is worth the extra outlay? Its a lot of $$$ to get this stuff here down under, and usually mail order to boot.

Cheers

Richard.

Richard,

I personally use a 2 step process. I first hand polish the paint with 3M Imperial Hand Glaze. I then wax the car with either Blitz Wax or P21S wax; both waxes have high levels of carnuba wax.

Check out the following web site and the "how-to" articles for more details and tips.

My message was really the top coat - assume I have properly prepped the paint so that is free of oxidation. Once that is done, does applying Zymol give a better finish that Meguiars to justify the exorbitant cost?

In my opinion, Blitz or P21S wax give just as good a top coat shine as Zymol at a significantly lower cost. A tin of Blitz wax is about US$16.00; Zymol is about US$60.00. Zymol is a good wax, but I would rather save my money for other goodies.

To answer your question RG5, Zymol and P21S are of comparable quality, and both are marginally better than Gold Class. I personally use P21S because I'm willing to pay a little more for a better wax, and it's as good as anything else you can buy (except perhaps for Pinnacle Sovereign, which I will never try due to it's ludicrous price). Just try some and see if you think the extra cost is worth it.

I tested p21S vs. Meguiar's Gold class - no improvement.

Zymol will only last 1 hour ....

Rejex! I'm too blind to see the difference in Maquier's and Rejex, but, the Rejex is great for after getting in the rain and just wiping down the car quickly. Do the windows too. Works like rain x as far as repelling water.

We get a Rennlist discount. Check previous threads.

I nomally just use the Gold Class clear coat prep and swirl reducer, then apply the Gold Class liquid wax ie a 2-step process as per the instructions.

Basically to get the paint as smooth and oxidation free as possible before the liquid wax goes on.

Has anyone tried the NXT Generation liquid wax?

I haven't tried P21S but I've tried Meguiars, Mothers, and Zymol. I keep coming back to Zymol because it povides the best shine and the lowest drag. It isn't very durable, so I tend to use a more durable, long-lasting synthetic for the winter months, but for the warmer months I don't mind waxing each car once/month.

I use the exact same products Bruce mentions with great success. I use Blitz Wax on the daily drivers and P21S on the 911 (everything gets 3M Hand Glaze). Before car shows, I strip the 911 with Dawn, then reapply the 3M Hand Glaze followed by 2 light coats of P21S. The surface prep and polish that you use helps tremendously in what kind of shine you get when you are all done.

I went pretty **** when I first got my 84 Carrera. It was in great shape but needed detailing. I surfed the internet more than you would looking for **** and found a bunch of good websites. I ended up using stuff that was available thru my local auto paint jobber. Something about being able to talk to somebody about the product. I tried alot of things before doing what i did.

I bought a porter cable polisher. Shop around, prices will vary. A local wholesaler had it a decent price.

Step 1) Mother's #2 Fine cut cleaner
Step 2) Mother's #9 Swirl remover
Step 3) Mother's Gold Class wax

I Used microfiber towel and pure cotton undershirts. I was very happy with the results but I think I could have done better. I figure it was my inexperience.

I tried: 3m Hand Glaze, great on my motorcycles, but not so good on the 911; Meguiare's system, and 3m Machine polish. None of these worked as good at Mothers. There are alot of professional branded products out there and the websites below will pitch them. There are a couple of good detailing forums also.

Here are some other sites you might want to check out.
