76 won't start
 

I have a 76 with the original CIS injection system. I finally sorted out my voltage problem, car has been running great except for some popping when the car is cold.I pulled it out of the garage started fine but with a slight backfire,tried to pull it back in a few hours later the car wouldn't start.It turns over nice and strong but won't start.I got it back in the garage and let it sit over night.Next morning I go out and it starts after a few seconds but jumps to 5k rpm and dies and won't start.I'm getting a nice healty spark from the coil wire.I pulled the line off the filter which I replaced while I had the lines off and I got a good couple of ounces of fuel in a container after a few seconds of turning it over.The engine has about 40k on a complete rebuild with all upgrades including Carrera tensioners and pop off valve.Is it possible the pop off valve failed and I cracked my airbox when it backfired and it's throwing off the air mixture? Anybody out there who had a similar problem and figured it out the info would be apreciated.

It's possible that the pop-off valve came loose, or its flap stuck open. Remove your air filter cover and check it out, it'll only take a minute...

Pete thats is exactly what happened.I pulled the air cleaner off and the pop off valve came unglued,just need to reglue it. I should have thought of that before I did this post. Well I'm off to the hardware store to buy some expoxy.Thanks for your reponse.

Often when the pop-off valve if fitted the mating surface of the valve section that fits into the airbox is not "roughed-up" - hence the epoxy only has a relatively smooth surface to grip. Even with the valve fitted the airbox, and hence the valve, is likely at some stage to see some pressure which can be enough to dislodge the pop-off valve. I would recommend using a course grit paper on the pop-off valve outer surface.

I did rough up the mating surface of the pop off valve before regluing it.Thanks for the advice.

No problem Steve - I learned from experience - my spanner man didn't rough up the surface and the valve "popped" out after a few weeks! I did the job properly and it has been OK now for a number of years.
