Default Porsche 915 transmission upgrade

Guys I just got a 85 911 with the infamous 915 trans, I was shocked to know that it does not come with a spring load from 1-2 to 3-4, which seems completely unacceptable. I know a lot of you recommend the Seine short shift kit but it seems to be out of production for years. Now my question is what's the best option for a short shift kit that would add the spring load without breaking the bank like the wevo kit? Would the factory Porsche short shift kit add the spring load? or can i just get the spring itself?

Thanks for the input and happy christmas!

Wevo is good and works amd their stuff is tops. Personally i wouldn’t bother with others. But i prefer to embrace the flop. Try a 901 sometime.

grab the 50 dollar spring offered by a Pelican Parts vendor. centres it in the 3 - 4 plane.
from Germany, i believe.

Infamous 915 transmission? My humble opinion is that drive the car, be precise with your shifting.
Don’t try to be fast in the beginning. 915 require determined and precise shifting.
Shortly, learn to use a manual transmission.

Verify also that the linkage is correctly adjusted.

I would keep the 915 as is. I got my 85 last June and I was not happy with that feature at first. Now I love it. The unsprung gate becomes part of your muscle memory amnd after 100-200 miles it was second nature. I think it adds to the sense of being in a car made for racing. You always know the gear you are in and you never miss it.

The only hitch for me is switching to my 997. In 4th or 6th sometimes I have to think about what gear I am in before downshifting. Oddly enough, I miss the gear indicator on my ex-Cayman.

I absolutely LOVE the old feel of the 915. It gives so much character to the car! Also I saw some people say that the short shift kit kinda ruined it for them and they wish they didn't change it.

Added Karsten spring ($60 USD) to mine and it brings the shift back to the 3, 4 neutral plane nicely.

I have a 901 in my long hood hot rod with tons of power in the 2.8 rs/r set up --- take the advice of others, much better in stock form, takes a bit to get it right, but its so worth it. I've driven a 915 with a wevo short shift kit on it that felt great...but as the others said, driving them in stock fashion has many benefits.

There is something about that long throw and deliberate shifts. Let’s synchros time to work.
Use your right foot to keep the revs right.

its fun

Once in awhile I do the rev match but mostly just give the synchros a few seconds to do their job and I think that’s how Porsche intended with the 915

Unless your 915 gearbox has been recently refreshed of you drove one of these cars when they were brand new, I'd suggest the OP has no idea what a proper 915 is supposed to shift like. I can tell you from experience and someone who's owned a number of G50 cars and then my first 915 that chasing better shifting through upgrades wasted money if the gearbox has bad synchros/sliders, etc. It's nothing more than taking the long way round to where you'll eventually end up. I'd find someone who really knows these cars who can drive yours and give you an opinion. Most of them are in need of a refresh today, especially since you have a lot of cars coming into a heated-up market and sellers not wanting to spend $3-4k sorting out a gearbox that still works, even if it's not optimally.

There are some great upgrades, but none will fix a box that needs to be sorted first. A sorted 915 is great to drive and worth every penny.

Agree 100% I started with the Karsten spring and fresh Swepco fluid but it needed new synchros because engaging 1st gear was a grind and 2nd was difficult. It ended up in the shop getting the synchros replaced for $1,800 and the clutch was 1/2 way through so we replaced that for another $600 and I’ll tell you this car is a dream to drive. Just to note, my understanding is that the G50 is nice but repairs are costlier than a 915 when the time comes.

When I took over ownership of my 86 Targa, 1st was only available at a full stop. Second was rough too. Had the box refreshed shortly after. Love it! LOVE IT! now.

For street driving yes. but if you are tracking or racing, imho ..the 915 just sucks. no matter what shifter, what gearbox synchro massaging is done ....SLOW shifting simply does not work under race conditions... its a total fallacy

I have had multiple G50 and 915 boxes all professionally built. thats my data set. just mho... attack and discuss at will

915 is def not a modern tranny, my Jeep jk (wrangler) shifts better... with that said the 915 of pasts have won many races and was design to change gears pretty easily depending on what track. I come from the Porsche watercooled world and that has spoiled me... the mindset is just different with the 915.
