Yes, it does help with the carpet wear, but it also is a drivability benefit. Keeping your left foot on a level plane to the clutch helps with fatigue and rowing the gears. There is not a lot of room in the upper left well, so my foot rests on a 2" section of carpet (that I don't think is squared off). Compared to the 991 where there is a nice landing spot so it just a lateral foot movement from dead peddle to clutch.
