The only G50's selling in the 80's or higher are prime exames with ultra low miles on premium colors with perfect documentation. Just because a car is offered for sale in the $80's or $90's does not mean it's going to sell there. If you want a 930 in similar condition to what I described above it's still around 50 percent higher. A run of the mill nice driver in average condition G50 can be had in the $40's with miles. A run of the mill driver 930 with miles is still in the $70's. Sure you can find a price here or there thats different but on average like condition G50's are not price equivalent with 930's.

equal condition, 930 cost more.
that said, 930 is not liked by all. I take a 86 915 over any 930

I've seen in multiple threads that you prefer the 915 over the G50, I'd love to hear your thoughts as to why. As someone in the market for an 84-89, I keep telling myself to hold out for a G50 but I want to convince myself that I'd be happy with a 915 lol.

I was in exactly that position since early last fall until I finally found my G50 late March. I looked for what seemed forever to get the exact G50 car I wanted, almost went for a "close enough" 915 car and kicked myself for a few weeks when I decided to pass on it and then it seemed like the wrong decision. Then the exact g50 came along that matched my specs perfectly. But you've got to be quick, the speculators are all over these cars, at least a g50 coupe. From my first call on the car until I flew into see it 36 hours later, seller had received several sight unseen offers above asking, mainly from Cali, but also germany. Thankfully he was a stand up guy and we got it done..

I'm assuming it was worth the wait? I was very close to pulling the trigger on a well sorted 86. I never test drove a G50 though and none are local to me. The 915 felt fine, but my friends who are also porsche owners have told me that if I plan on keeping the car forever (which I do) then I might as well hold out for the right G50...

Someone bought the 86 I test drove and I feel regret not picking it up sometimes.

There's a definite pecking order, turbos aside. The special model g50's like 25th anniversary arguably at the top (limited color range may not appeal to some buyers), then the 87-89 g50's, the 84-86 3.2's, the 78-83 SC's. And not to start any flame wars here, but from my studying the market very carefully the coupes will bring more than an equal condition targa or cv. The 915/g50 topic has been beaten to death, I prefer the g50, and it was a non negotiable point for me after having owned SC's and a 964, so my field shrank down to the 87-89 models.

That being said a very clean SC coupe in a beautiful yellow shade just sold for $50k, a bad '89 g50 would not bring the same money. Condition and mileage is everything.

One other thing and perhaps most importantly imo: if condition is equal - what color do you want? I had some colors that were a no go for me, some I could accept, and the one I really wanted (silver over black )

I inherited a 1988 Cabriolet... are all 1988’s the so called G50’s? If not, how do you identify it as such?

Yes. It is in reference to the type of manual transmission. All 1987-1989 Carrera 3.2 cars have the G50.

it's for sure not a price issue as the one I have I paid more than any G50 coupe on BaT, I am a sucker.
it's lighter and harder to drive.
you have to feel it
I also love 901 box which some of my friends simply can't drive.
I like a GOOD 915. some are worn. a good 915 shifts the same as G50
I have G50 in 964/993 already.

that said, there's nothing wrong with either box.
its YOUR money, only YOUR decision matters, buy the one YOU want to drive...
it's good to have choices.

It is quite addicting watching these auctions. This one went ballistic, Has to be a record for a low mileage non original SC coupe. The after sale sniping is entertaining. You have to have a thick skin to participate on BAT.
