Just purchased - 1977 911S Coupe
Hey all .. I recently purchased this numbers matching car. I finally get it tomorrow but I had some simple newbie questions and quickly found this site. I know this site will be a great reference, but man, some of the threads for the 77 are SCARY - lol, maybe I should have spent more time researching before I bought!
The engine was rebuilt in 99 and the seller kept all records. Wish me luck but I'm excited to join the club!!

If the engine was redone no need to be scared at all. Looks like lack of galvanizing has not hurt that car. If you had it checked underneath and its fine you will be golden.

Thanks for the replies! It was redone in 1999 at 110k miles, and the clutch was replaced in 2003. It now has 174k miles. I know it's an old car and will have things that need to be addressed over time, but I'm glad to hear you say I don't have to lose too much sleep. Lol, as of late, my lack of sleep has been simply just waiting to see it for the first time. Nothing like buying a car sight unseen. I bought it via BAT and the comments/community helped me over some of the mental hurdles.
Thanks again! I look forward to hearing more about your vehicles/experiences and I'm sure I'll be back for more newbie questions!

Just make sure you have documentation on engine rebuild as it may be valuable down the road. It should indicate work for inserts in the case and possibly even a " line bore"
Buying cars sire unseen is always nerve wracking. Especially cars of this vintage.
Just come back with your impressions.

Congrats on your purchase. I like the looks of it and the stance. Has it been lowered?
Look forward to hearing what you think when you see it in person. I drove two cars that ended up selling on BAT when I was looking. Both were much different in person than represented on BAT. Not saying that is a negative in your case as tons of great cars sell on BAT but just the 2 I actually saw were lacking. Hope you enjoy it for many miles.
I looked at the BAT listing. The 2002 date code on the tires is a little scary. Please replace those soon. At that purchase price it looks to be a good example.

Thanks for the additional welcomes!
@wareaglescott - yes, the car was lowered. Some on BAT voiced that they would personally adjust it back. They didn't expand on why other than being nervous about railroad tracks, etc. - any further thoughts from you though? Thanks for mentioning the tires... I should probably give that real consideration. Any suggestions on types of tires or where to buy from?? I live in Iowa but this car will only see nice weather days and absolutely no winters.
@Clark W Griswold - I just looked up your '80 SC - looks great! Have you taken possession yet? It took me a while to find a driver interested in picking up the '77 because it was somewhat remote.
Thanks again all!

If the engine was redone properly, there is no need to be scared at all. An align bore or line bore may not have been needed but it should have been checked carefully when completely dis-assembled.
Check the records carefully and maybe call the shop that did the work.
It is better than just galvanizing: 1977 models – on – had Thyssen steel in entire body (Frere, p. 201); an “important step forward was the use of zinc-coated sheet steel for the manufacture of the entire body structure (except for the coupe’s roof on early production cars). Coated on both sides, this made the structure virtually immune against the formation of rust….” (Boschen & Barth, p. 143)

Yeah line bore is not always necessary. If it is it would likely have been subcontracted to the machine shop. Along with the case insert work
I was more interested in the other page that showed the work done.
Im sure with all that work it was done properly. Nothing to worry about.
