CV Boot Replacement - HELP! :)
Hi all,
I had a large split in my rear-right-outer CV Boot. I was able to get the axle off and I cut the remaining boot off so I could assess the situation. I notice that the brass/goldish colored coupling that the boot fit over does not seem perfectly round. It actually appears that the axle rod has bent it out of shape/round. (see photo) I'm pretty sure this is not normal correct?
And if this is not normal what do I order to replace? I'm assuming I can just order an entire outer CV and not have to replace the entire axle?
I already ordered/received an outer CV boot kit, but it's just the rubber boot, grease and clamps.
thanks in advance!
Jim

Three Wheelin'
Have you tried just gently bending it back to roughly a round shape? That's what I would do but, then again, I'm cheap. As long as the boot is able to form a seal on that lip I don't see it being a problem.

It's an '87 911 coupe. The actual boot is missing in the photo which makes it look very odd. I think I just have to remove/rebuild the inner CV boot in order to get the new outer boot back on the axle rod. More work, but a lot less expensive than purchasing a completely new axle assembly.

No problem, just bend it back so that the boot seal properly. You probably let the shaft drop and it bent the shield.
If your existing dust boot broke, you should clean very carefully all old grease and dirt out. Easiest if you dismantle the CV-joint but if you're not familiar to do it, just dissolve all grease and clean the joint.
Do not move car withot drive shaft! If you have to, take a big bolt and use it instead of drive shaft to keep the wheel bearings together. If you move car without holding wheel bearings together, bearings can ”open” and dirt get inside. This destroy the bearing.
