Default 1977 911 Targa S - need price guidance

Need some pricing guidance. I am thinking about buying a one owner 64,000 mile Targa. It seems to be in great condition but owner has very little in the way of service records.

Any thoughts or opinions are appreciated...what would be a fair price to buy the car?

Thanks,

Rich

In my humble opinion I think we need more info and ideally some pictures. Even without documentary evidence, does it still have the 5-blade fan and thermal reactors or were they replaced? when? Has the engine been checked for pulled head studs? Any signs of rust? Is it still a narrow body or was it flared and otherwise modified?

'77 Targas are still pretty much the runt of the litter of air-cooled 911s, but middies in general are actually very sweet cars, I love mine. I think if it's in a good shape, in a run of the mill color scheme (like guards / black, black / black), it could be a low 30s car. If it's an Irish Green (or similar holy grail color) on Cork leather unicorn with all original paint, obviously would be a lot more money.

Sahara beige is a fantastic color. The interior pics are very bad, but the fuzzy covers on the seats don't portend well. Have you looked at the car in person?

I have and it looks great in person. The car is in great condition inside and out.

Go for it then. That color is gorgeous and extremely rare. I almost bought a '74 coupe in Sahara beige before I bought my car.

Hi Team,

to Pile on here, I have an opportunity to purchase a 76 Targa White/Black and wanted some help on valuations

The Good
  • Jut had a top to bottom engine rebuild, with the proper parts, fan, bolts etc by a reputable LA Porsche specialist
  • Just had the body and drive-train fully restored, rubbers, seals, panels and resprayed - by the same folks
The Bad
  • Patchy service history prior to rebuild
  • Interior needs work (cracked dash and so on)
  • Rear flares rolled out to turbo size
I won';t have pics for a week - ill post them, but right now I'm just trying to get a range within +/- $5K. My initial thought is $20K, I'm not sure how much those flared arches hurt prices

Another option would be a 77 Coupe which I can get for $15K but needs to be assembled and restored, so a project car

Thanks for the advice

If it's had a thorough restoration, I'm not sure what you need the previous records for.... its basically all new at this point. If the interior is in bad shape, just imagine the way the whole car looked before they painted it. Were they covering up big trouble, or just doing a refresh?? Lots of questions on the flares. The fenders can not be "rolled" out to turbo size. The arches are cut out, and then turbo arches are either added in fiberglass or steel. Just putting turbo flares on the back looks really bad (I've seen it before), are you sure they didn't do the SC/Carrera flare on the rear? That's much more common, and if it's steel / nicely done my opinion is it doesn't hurt the value immensely. Mostly because 77 Carreras are not wildly valuable. If they're fiberglass or poorly done, then it will be more of a concern. Check the overhaul records for the engine carefully, was the main bearing bore checked or trued, and was the case time certed? Without knowing more, or seeing pics, both of these cars sound like they will cost you a lot of money in the long haul. Why not save another $10k and buy and SC?
