Default Matching numbers

Looking to buy a 930 Turbo. I'm looking for a car that is as close as possible to original. When it comes to matching numbers, does the engine and transmission have to be the same as the "VIN" of the car or is it enough is it's "close"?

Not sure I understand your question. Engine & tranny serial numbers do not match the VIN; they each have a different format.

You need a Kardex or a COA to find the serial numbers (VIN, engine and transmission) for a particular car when it left the factory. "Matching" serial numbers does NOT mean they are all the same serial numbers.

Yes, but the last digits of the engine, tranny and body could theoretically match. One car I checked had '00664' for the body and '0684' for the engine.

I'm used to Corvettes and there they all should have the same numbers (last part of the sequence) I think I read somewhere that for Porsches, they should be "close" but not necessarily the same number. I don't remember where read that though.

News to me. I have a COA on all 911's ever owned and none of the last digits ever matched. If they did, it would just be by coincidence.

No, they don’t match each other. A legitimate car should have a coa offered with the sale. It’s a couple hundred bucks. A nice 930 is 6 figures these days. Trust nobody. Verify everything.

To answer the OPs original question, "numbers matching" is simple. It means that all the numbers on the engine, the transmission, and the body exactly match the corresponding numbers shown on documents such as the factory Kardex or the PCNA COA. Just some of the numbers matching, or numbers that are close but not exactly matching does not count as "numbers matching".

Yes but he thinks all three numbers should match each other , this is absolutely not the case for Porsche.
Why not ask the guys on the turbo forum to verify

I think we made our point about "matching numbers", but 993tt appears to have left the building.

try the 930 forum, interesting that OP knows the 930 designation for a Turbo, yet posts on the 911 NA forum?

We especially like the posters that ask how to update their PCM software, or what is a reasonable price for a 2016 Carrera GTS. 🤬

Those are a lot of fun. 😉
