Default Oil Cooler replacement

I would like to replace the trombone loop "oil cooler" in the right front fender of my '77 with a proper cooler, preferably with a fan. Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

PS. I tried the search function with poor results.

Very simple, Jim.

Elephant Racing sells a kit that gives you the two short flex hoses, the radiator cooler and mounting hardware. I would strongly recommend adding the fan and shroud.

There is also a how-to article over at Pelican: https://www.pelicanparts.com/techart...Oil_Cooler.htm

I installed the elephant racing kit which has helped keep temps down on the track tremendously, but good lord it was a pain in the *** to get the hoses installed. Maybe my hard lines were bent or something, but I spent hours sweating and swearing, bending the lines by hand, to get them juuuuuust right such that the hoses could get connected. Worth it, though.

I assume this is primarily a street car...? You can save yourself some cash by sourcing some less expensive parts. Setrab has a kit as an option. I found this photo on line....owner used Earls lines and fittings for a nice street application. Whatever design you wind up installing suggest you fabricate some form of louvered protection on the back of the cooler..... road debris off the tires will clog it in short order.

Thanks, Mike. Even though the ER solution is a bit pricey, I believe that is the route I'll take as it seems to be a very comprehensive kit. The fan and thermostat option is important for a South Carolina summer.

Get the Elephant cooler, bits, and controller, but skip the fan. This one is $30 and moves twice the air...It also fits flush to the cooler, which the Elephant does not.

I skipped the fan myself because I was feeling lazy and didn't want to move the horn, just twist the mount a bit. Not an issue for me--it isn't a traffic car I just needed the extra cooling on track.

FWIW, I have an 83 SC Targa with AC, I installed the mocal oil cooler kit, put in the aftermarket air scoops where the parking lights were in front bumper. I always wanted a whale tail, so I removed and stored original steel deck lid complete. I retrofitted a fiberglass lid and tail, maximized the air inlet and installed the oil cooler kit fan and thermostat in engine compartment, pulling air through deck lid opening, car never gets above 190 in the summertime, humid coast of South Carolina, in heavy traffic, stop and go.
