Unhappy AWOL Porsche Hood Crests

Folks,

HELP! I'm keeping Porsche in business solely through my purchases of the Porsche hood crest for my '86 911.

I'll soon be on my third after 1 1/2 years of ownership. I get the gasket just right, use new speed nuts and try my best not to tighten them too much. The crest lays firm & flat on the hood ans the gasket seals prefectly.

The mounting posts just seem to separate from the shield after a while and the crest goes bye-bye with the two posts still firmly in place.

I've found one with only one post detached, JB Welded it back to the shield and it lasted until today (3 months) when it fell off in traffic. I was able to recover it so I'm sure they're not being stolen - they're truly coming off during use.

The only hint I have is that I use two fingers on the crest to close the hood (fairly gently but not baby like - the hood DOES need to latch) so the crest is my 'pressure point' for hood closure. I'm thinking over time this is too much for the way the posts are attached to the shield.

Any one have a similar experience and advice (other that JB Welding the entire crest to the hood!)?

Thanks!

Barry the Badgless

Barry,

While not a direct answer, Porsche parts are warrantied for two years. When the post separates before that, return it for replacement.

I've owned Porsches over 35 years and never had a hood crest come loose. I never push on the crest. Maybe that's it. JB weld is great stuff, but I wouldn't use it to hold the piece in place. Just use the clips and push on the hood at the bottom.

Happens to me to on a '71. Went through a couple crests...

I ended up glueing it on - used goop, or some similar silicone based substance about seven years ago and it's worked fine. (car doesn't have original paint btw)

Truth is - it was supposed to be a temporary fix - Emblem popped off while polishing the car getting ready for a wedding. I needed to do something, and that temp fix has "stuck"...

Mine came off on the interstate, smacked the windshield, I thought someone was shooting at me! Got home... crest was gone. Nothing like one hitting the windshield at 75! Bought one, put it on, no problems since. I do not use crest to shut hood, I use the hood, lower edge below crest. I agree with Bill, keep your receipt, if it breaks, take it back for replacement.

Barry,

I'm not sure if the 993's require a different hood closing procedure than the older 911's, but the instruction manual for my car says to close the hood at the left and right corners, not in the middle.
