Mileage discrepancies; how to value?
There is a 1981 SC near me (https://newjersey.craigslist.org/cto...581804874.html) that is both well maintained and in a color I'd like. The interior was replaced and the paint resprayed so those aren't reliable indicators.
It's listed as 90k miles but the actual number might be higher than that and I'm not sure how to think about it. I am not worried about reliability, more worried about questions if I end up reselling it later. Mileage discrepancy is 13 years old and was corrected (gears replaced). But looking at the Carfax there are several years where no mileage was accrued. Couple that w/ the asking price ($45k) is quite high for a 1981 SC.
Any thoughts on how to think about this?

Looking at the interior it seems that whoever owned it took care of the inside.Usually the headliner is pretty much toast after 30 years but the
carpets and interior trim seem pretty clean, hopefully it's a tell tale sign of the rest of the maintenance on the car !
A thorough PPI will tell you the actual condition !

Interior was swapped from brown to black so it only has a few years on it. With 1981-1984 selling somewhere in the 30-40 range I think the ask on this is outside context. But then that invites other questions — what’s Pacific Blue worth?

Is this being sold by a private party or dealer/ broker?
Service history available to validate millage? If not, perhaps they have record of previous owners - Look in owners manual for names and or service stamps and do some detective work, call previous owners or indy shops that worked on the car and see what they tell you regarding millage and history on car.
Looks very nice from the CL photos. My.02- 45K is high for an 81 with unknown history.

Private party. Going to try to look at it this week — don’t steal it away from me! If it looks as good as the photos will have a PPI done and proceed from there.
Is there any discount for non matching interior? Considering I might want a duck tail on it don’t think that will matter.

You know now you’ve gotten me barking up the 993 tree.
From what I’ve seen of closed transactions usually they’re trading between $30-40k. There was a great Rosewood one that I just missed — sold $36k.

It is not uncommon for older 911 Porsches to have mileage discrepancies. Gauges stop working and are restored or replaced etc.. These are now antique cars.
This is why documented cars with service records get the good money.
Once these cars are restored or rebuild the original milege is not really a tell tale sign of the vehicles age.
I wouldnt be turned off by mileage discrepancies if the price is reflected as such and if the car has been rebuilt/restored.
I currently own a super clean 1979SC that had the speedo swapped out from miles to kilometers. The Kilometer guage may have been reset to zero or came from a low mileage car.
Either way the car is in very good conditon with no rust or accidents and i am happy with it.

Checked out the car yesterday and it is beautiful. And talking with others it just sounds like everyone had some sort of mileage discrepancy, it's just a matter of how extreme and how well documented. If I move forward w/ the purchase I think PPI will tell me what I need -- because it doesn't look like it racked up an additional 100k miles.
Okay I'll stop sounding like an advertisement. I think I need to find one that needs a little love/refurbishment.
