Keep in mind at that mileage you may need to consider a top end rebuild....valves usually need attention at 125,000 miles. If you have a good collection of receipts you may find out that that work had already been done--or talk to the shop where it was maintained. The trip to that shop is worth a pretty penny.

The engine was rebuilt. To what extent, I will have to wait to review the receipts.
Update: I spoke to the widow this week. She is really not interested in having to deal with her husband's pride and joy leaving her garage at this point. I get it. He loved this car. She will be forced to deal with it when her home sells. She thanked me for my patience and will contact me when she is ready..

BTW
I forgot to thank everyone, as I truly appreciate all the helpful responses.
I am in this for the long haul. It took 7 months for me to finally secure the purchase of his 928 4 years ago. I know nothing is quick and good things take time!

Update:
Looks like it's going to be in my garage as soon!
I saw that their home had 'sale pending' on the real estate website three weeks ago, so I reached out to the widow thinking she forgot about me. Not the case and she asked that I keep in touch as she wasn't ready to move the car quite yet. She texted me yesterday and it looks as though the stars and moon aligned - we agreed at $27,500.

Update:
Unfortunately the '87 won't be in my driveway. For reasons of timing, she was away for two weeks only to have my family away on vacation in Kiawah this week, we just couldn't get the transaction completed. We were hoping to get it done this upcoming Monday afternoon. Please see her text:

Hi Tim, someone offered $37k for Duke's car, and I need to take the highest price. Lots of changes ahead for me & I need the extra money.

I hope you understand. I think Duke would want you to have the car, but for me, with loss of his income, it is a business decision .

I will leave the charger on the front porch for you to pick up whenever you are in the area.
****************************************************
I am beyond words. Had I not been gone this week, I would have the car home.

Wow. 27.5 would have been quite a steal. I think even 37.5 would be a good price these days. See if you can counter that bid, esp since maybe you saw it and negotiated first.
