Default Which 911S would you buy?

All things being equal, would you buy a 2.0, a 2.2, or a 2.4?

I'm reasonably sure that all 3 will hold their value in relative terms, so this is less a value question, and more a question of driving/ownership enjoyment. I'd be interested to hear fellow Rennlister's opinions and experiences. I hear the 2.0 revs freely. The 2.4 is a bit more torquey? The 2.2 has cool stickers etc. Any and all comments welcomed.

Thanks for your input.

I've owned multiple versions of each displacement, all great cars. My favorites are the 2.2's, then the 2.0's and finally the 2.4's. The differences are extremely subtle. I'd buy the best one you can find regardless of the year.

2.2L motors have higher compression

I'd go by the trans. ('70/71 best) and/or the nifty oil door on a '72 (which has the worst version of the 915 made)

This is one of my favourite Porsches of all time, and this image is very popular on the web. The owner was a great friend, but sadly passed away last year. This is the 911 that made me fall in love with classic 911s.. the sound ... the vibrations, acceleration...etc. Although I've never driven it, I've been a passenger countless times, for what it's worth. It's a '72 S with a 2.4 I believe ... so you can guess my pick. Good luck with your decision.. all great cars!

Under 2.4 sounds best unless the compression has been bumped. Compression in the 2.0-S and the 2.2 -S is 9.8:1. Wiith a sport muffler they are quite raucous. The 2.4-S is 8.5:1 and while it sounds, ok it pales in comparison.

I guess we need the OP to put forth what mods he is willing to consider...

- reversible mods?
- hidden mods
etc.

Perfectly stated and I concur 100%

The flares and carbs are valuation killers, I sold a very similar car in 2016 for $105k

Never had many options when looking for a particular Porsche. Get the best car in the best condition with preferred options for a price you can afford. Compromise always plays a part. Good luck!

both easily reversed if it wasn’t overpriced in the first place.
