Default Are the Targas and Turbos Carreras?

Hi All!

Like My headline says. Are a 911, say a SC Targa also a Carrera or is it just a Targa? And what about the 930 Turbo? Is it "just" a Turbo or is it a Carrera Turbo?

And if We look at the 991 today, are there any differences? Are a 991 Targa just a Targa or is it a Carrera Targa.

If You ask Me a Targa is not a Carrera but that is just My 5 cents!

But if One look at old Targa pictures the Targas sure have Carrera badges on the engine lid!

Can anyone help Me!

Well you have opened a real can of worms there with lots of opinions .. here is mine ...
the Carrera is truely only the 3.2 built between 84-89
It did come in targa and cab format although not as common as coupe.
So a Carrera Targa and Carrera cab are real cars

The 930 is it’s own animal but I have heard of the turbo Carrera. So I will leave others to comment on that

So in summary in my mind
78-83 911 sc
84-89 911 Carrera
90-94 964

Anything after that Is purely magical marketing spin by Porsche to capture something to sell more cars.

There Are those that believe sc stands for Super Carrera but I will just call it an sc for today’s discussion.
There are also anomalies such as the Carrera 3.0 released in Europe but let’s not try to bunch them in

Flame away for those who don’t agree. I’m pretty fire resistant anyway.
Unlike a Carrera with old fuel lines

I'll be the first to go down the rabbit hole. An SC Targa is an SC Targa, some say Super Carrera but not Carrera. A 930 is a Turbo unless an early car ('75-76) then it's a Turbo Carrera. As for the 991, please post on the 991 forum. Before I continue please define "old Targa" I have owned a 1987 Targa in the past and yes the deck lid read Carrera, it's a Carrera.

Don't forget the first and most desirable 911 Carrera's: 1972 and 1973 911 2.7 RS carried Carrera badges and rocker panel scripts.

And that's just 911's. The very first Porsche with a Carrera badge was a 356. From 1954 I think.

The Carrera name was used in the 911 line first in 1973 as the Carrera RS, in 74-77 as a Carrera and Carrera 3.0, few different configurations - 2.7 MFI, 2.7 CIS and 3.0 CIS motors. 84-89 3.2 were also called Carrera's. The turbo Carrera name was used on US only 76-77 930's.

none of these were released for sale in North America correct ? they would have to have been imported separately.
I think North America only had the 911S 2.7 CIS car from 74-77 no ?

US had 74 and 75 Carrera. 2,7 cis with no performance improvement over an S but gearing was slightly different to gain a little improvement in 0-60 and topend . It was more marketing. They did have slightly flared rear fenders, 7 and 8's, 74 had ducktail, 75 had teatray , Some items that were options on 911's came standard on US 74/ 75 carrera - Electric windows on coupes, sport steering wheel etc, .

Lets not forget about some of the old thoroughbreds though...

904 Carrera 6/8/GTS versions from '64-'65
The '66 906 Carrera 6, when Porsche brought the 911's flat-6 into the platform!
What about the Italian designed '60 Abarth Carrera GTL??

Just throwing a wrench in, haha. Currently rubbing my palms together, waiting to see where this thread goes. I bet I learn something!

Ironically the 915/06 gearbox fitted to 74-75 ROW Carreras was the same as the 74 Normal gearbox. The US Carrera got the 915/40, just like the 911S got.

Maybe all this is true but when you order parts do any cars other than the 84-89 state Carrera?

If SC doesn't stand for Super Carrera, what does it stand for? Lots of things start with S or C. :-)
