Smog help!
Hello all!
I will be picking up a lovely 1988 911 targa soon. My first air cooled. The car is modified and has ssis. I live in east bay sf bay area and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how you all get your modified cars smogged? Please pm me if you have info on whom i could bring car to. thanks in advance! leon |
You put the stock system on. Is the car registered in California now?
Anywhere in this state on owner transfer requires smog check. Some areas require bi annual checks, some very very remote areas do not. Or you find a smog guy. Good luck with that. Jail time and huge fines have made this a much harder thing. |
Thanks. Yes, I live in area that will require smog checks every two years. sigh..
the 1988 car i bought doesn't come with any of the stock parts so no stock cats. i hope it's not going to cost me an arm and a leg to find a way to get car to pass smog here. arghhhh |
how handy are you ?
I guess it would be illegal for me to suggest picking up used parts and just bolting them on for the test . Im actually surprised there isn't an underground guy that will ship you 2 exchangers, muffler cat and piping for a week or two for testing at a nominal fee.. then it all goes back after testing .. I mean VW can do it right ? |
yah i would think so but i just don't know. None of my friends are into porches or cars so i don't have a lot of connections in this car world here. any suggestions who i can chat with?

anyone that can help please PM me! i'd appreciate it! =o)

It's ok, you'll still have one arm and one leg. Hope it's a Sportomatic.

You might look on eBay for the parts you need to pass smog in the wonderful state of California. I don't think there is another way but to add OEM exhaust parts (including a CAT).
|
Friend of mine brought his car from Ohio... and had to get stock exhaust back in. I have a high flow cat and every two years I have to install the OEM cat to pass inspection even if the high flow cat co/no tests are as good as the original.
Good Luck....gotalovecalifornia..... Abe |
^^^ visual inspection is part of the game.... :crying:
Two sources for help would be European Auto Salvage Yard (EASY) in Emeryville and Parts Heaven in Hayward. They can, at least, offer advice and review what you would need to pass smog. EASY has a gathering for coffee on first Sat. of month if I recall...... Others may want to confirm or call them! |
Prepare to start a spending spree-leon. There are many things one can get away with on cars but smog ain't one of them. And like others have mentioned, the test guy isn't going to get caught for you, me or anyone. Not worth the punishment. Be prepared.
