Another 997 2010 GT3 Shifter Installed
I’ve run the stock shifter with the EVO kit installed and the stock shifter with the B&M installed. I am now running the stock 997 2010 GT3 shifter and I have to say that this is likely the best shifter for my needs; street and track.
I liked the stock shifter with the EVO kit installed, but the throws were still a little on the long side.
The B&M, as reported here several times, was over-the-top notchy, and I removed it about a month or so later.
The 997 GT3 shifter console got really good reviews, and it was of course PnP.
I did not want to go too short again, so I avoided the 997 SSK setup.
There are only a few differences between the two shifters, the 996 GT3 (standard 996 shifter) and the 997 GT3:
After putting some miles on the sifter this weekend, I can honestly say, it makes the driving easier; the timing with the clutch travel and shifter travel just seems more intuitive, more in synch.
The travel now is just a little shorter and a little more precise and solid feeling.
Cost: $350 from Suncoast Porsche

- The center block in made from a different material it looks like, and is a different shape; I believe it is more rigid.
- There is a metal plate screwed into this center block position of the shifter, again adding rigidity I believe.
- The P/O of the GT3 modified the shifter slightly with an EVO kit, as you can see with the metal bearings at each end (red bits); this is a part of the stock 997 GT3 shifter (silver bits).
- The 997 linkages at the bottom of the shifter have rubber boots on them, where the standard shifter does not.
- The cases themselves are identical, sans part numbers.

Shifter is definitely an improvement over the oem and of course over the terrible BM one.

Btw just don’t test the cup cables cause I expect another write up soon. I know tried them both.

I concur.... I put the B&M in mine for a while, WAY too notchy! The B&M is a really nice shifter for all other Porsches (I have one in my Boxster, and it's great in that car) but, the GT3 has a different lever mechanism on the transmission which makes the B&M incompatible. The 997 GT3 shifter is a nice improvement over the stock 996 shifter - more precise without being overly short & notchy.

Just ordered the .1 997 shifter box.
I didn't ask this, but I assume that the 997 SCU comes with shifter linkages (I didn't order new ones and don't want to use the 996 ones).

So the new 997 GT3 shifter has metal bearings standard already?! That's a nice upgrade for sure.
Did you do the swap yourself?! Was it difficult? Looks like you got the centering tool (the green piece of plastic). Did you have to get that separately?

Yes, metal bearing pieces are already installed. Yep; did the swap myself; I’ve done it numerous times now; ~30min start to finish taking my time; its really straight forward. The console comes with the centering tool.

I always loved the feel of my 996/GT3 shift linkage. To me a signature GT3 quality..
I had cup shift cables and a 997 shifter put on my 996/GT3.. The change is absolutely amazing.
I have heard people describe it like a "springfield rifle bolt" and thats an understatement. It isn't a subtle improvement. I absolutely love it. Rock solid and precise. The slightly shorter throws are secondary to the precise feel.
The cup cables make a big difference too. Adds some noise as well. They have no rubber on the tips which gives less play but adds some amazing sounds. At idle in neutral the noise from the transmission sounds like a 68 chevy knocking badly. Clutch in and it goes away. Its a bit disconcerting at first. You sometimes hear it at low speeds.
But Now I have a precise shift assembly that feels like - a well oiled rifle bolt.
First reaction... "Holy Cr$ap!".. Reaction in the months since -

^ I drove his stripper6 for a session. The feel and precision of cup cable is buttery smooth. Didn't hear ne tranny noise and vibration- since it's gutted there's noise everywhere and they sound great : ). Mike
