I've read more than one article, feel free to do a Google search, that suggests breaking the engine in slowly and keeping rev ranges very limited is actually harmful to the engine.

The fact that break-in mile guidelines differ significantly from country to country is sufficient proof that not only are these recommendations arbitrary but are determined by legal considerations in each country.

Exactly. IIRC, Porsche actually had totally different break in procedures for the GT3 between the U.S. and Europe. U.S., take it easy you litigious tards. Europe, have at it.

I would also note that Porsche’s NA engines don’t really wake up until they’re past 4000RPMs on the dial. What happens with PDK, unless someone has granny foot and never merges on a freeway, i don’t see how revs would stay under 4k.

Common sense: warm up the oil, and don’t lug the engine, i like to change the oil at 1000 miles. I also vary the revs across the rev range as this is supposed to help seat the rings. How important this is given the tight tolerances of these high tech engines I couldn't say but it is advice i have heard from several highly competent mechanics.

That's hilarious. You do realize, that you can find just about any supporting opinion, with a Google search, right?

Is it as hilarious as the tenuous logic of your inference: that a supporting opinion, if found via google, must be erroneous because erroneous opinions can be found via google. You do realize both credible and non credible sources can be found via Google search, right?

This is exactly what I've been told by quality engine re-builders.

Right, of course. But I meant as the semi-official recommened "break in" procedure. IOW, no seriously recommended break in procedure other than common sense and making sure its up to temp before going nuts, as you'd do with a 100K mile one.

Quick question for those who owned a 981 GT4. I have about 300km in the clock on my 718 GT4 and made sure no to go beyond around 4.5k (mostly 2-4k). On the last 30km drive, the oil temperature went up to 113 degrees (Celsius - compared to 90 degrees on my Macan). Anything out of the ordinary here? There was quite a bit of heat coming out of the rear wheels when I stopped. Thanks!

NB: I should have said: was it the same with the 981? Also the same thing for those who already have the 718?

718 Spyder here, over 500km so far. 110 - 114 degrees Celcius is the right oil temp for continuing your break in. Happy revving!

Hello! Just took delivery of a 718 GT4 recently and when i asked our local dealer about proper break in procedure, the answer was just be careful with the first few hundred km while I get used to the car and then enjoy.

They added that car was broken in from the factory so nothing to worry.

I was reading the owner’s manual but couldn’t find any instruction on limiting revs initially... can anyone share which page number or which section of the manual contains info about this?

Thanks!

Oh, a can or warms here, you are going to get a lot of personal opinions on this one! There are a lot who drive it hard from day, do they plan on keeping the car?, most in that camp rarely do, just remember none of them is offered advice with their cheque book attached!

I personally will follow the factory recommended instructions in the manual. I don't have my Spyder yet but thought the manual said something like below 4500 RPM for the first 3000 km? IMHO I have seen no official Porsche document that categorically states the engine has been broken in at the factory either.
