While I wish they would, it doesn't look likely...

I’ve rented both base and S 718s, along with base and S 981s, and own a 987 base.
The 718 base 2.0T was the laggiest turbocharged engine I’ve ever experienced. It took multiple seconds to spool up when floored around 1800 RPM. Admittedly, you’re not supposed to use it that way, but you’re not supposed to lug an NA engine at low RPM either. The 718 S 2.5T is certainly better, but still laggier than the big Mercedes AMG motors, and slightly worse than the BMW B58. The Ford Ecoboost 2.0T is interestingly very responsive; perhaps it’s because they’re only trying to get 245 hp instead of 300, so they can get away with smaller turbos.
The Mercedes-Benz M178 in my AMG GT S has magically low turbo lag. It’s perhaps aided by relatively small turbos due to the AMG GT S’s “modest” output from the engine, and also the engine being big enough to have good torque to begin with.
The Mercedes-Benz M157 in my CL63 does have some perceptible lag in fully spooling up, but it’s just such a huge and powerful engine that it pulls like a freight train even before the turbos have spooled up, so it never feels laggy.
Ranking by personal perception of turbo lag from best to worst:
- Mercedes-Benz M178
- Mercedes-Benz M157
- Ford Ecoboost 2.0
- BMW B58
- 718 2.5T
- BMW B48
- 718 2.0T
Anyway, I welcome the new 718 GTS 4.0. Just need to decide if I’m willing to part with any of my cars to free up space and budget.

Im not a traditionalist.
I love my 3.0 turbo based 911.2
In my opinion, it drives better than the 3.8 NA from 991.1, but the 991.1 sounded better. I bought used so I could chose either. 991.2, instant torque, low lag, awesome!
The 2.5 is in the same ballpark. Throw in a Cobb, and lights out.
I also had a little Supercharged Lotus Elise. 4 banger, Toyota based, great fun. Never once did I think, man wish I had a 6 cylinder.
I hope in 2-3 years, I can pick up an 18 or 19 GTS for 40k, because it's a 4 cyl FI vs 6 cyl NA.
I won't care what the purists and traditionalists say, 718 GTS is a heck of a car.

Perhaps you're right but it seems unlikely to me that the current GTS, with a MSRP of over $80K will depreciate at that rate. I believe that a large number of the cars out there (and I use the word larger but there aren't all that many out there) were probably optioned in the $90K range so you would be looking at an almost 60% depreciation in 2-3 years. That's way beyond the normal depreciation curve, 4 cylinder or not. Personally, I think the 4 cylinders will take a hit initially but rebound to normal depreciation over the next 2-3 years. The 4.0 will be a great car but really offers no gain over the 4 other than making purists happy and, maybe, sounding better. Performance gains will be negligible if there are any gains and the price and current market for 2 seater sports cars will keep the numbers down. Only time will tell where the market goes but I think the best time to buy a used 4 cylinder might be now while the current owners are wondering about future depreciation.

Among turbocharged cars I currently own a 2017 AMG GT S (M178 engine), 2012 CL63 (M157 engine), and 2.0T 2017 Ford Escape. In the past, I’ve owned a 2016 BMW X1 (B48 engine) and 2018 BMW M240i.

Yeah it's probably more like 50k not 40k
2015-2016 GTS are in the 55k range, 4yrs old
2018 GTS are in the 65-70k range, 2yrs old
World expect same 55-60k in 2 more yrs.
Add in 4cyl vs 6cyl bias and I think 50k is realistic.
Throw in a recession, and could be steeper.

The 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 (that's a mouthful) might be the car I've been hoping Porsche would build to go with my 991.2 C2...powered, insulated top, a choice of smooth leather upholstery in colors other than black, many exterior color choices plus the NA 4.0 flat six and manual transmission.
God bless,
TT
