Of course, here in Australia the tax advantage of the "official" economy statistics is over $3400.00.

Interesting that it (718) appears to be better or equal in all areas but the exhaust note, and he still prefers the older car.

When you're right, you're right - everyone panning the car

Actually, any "panning" and "massive difference "of the car comes largely from the U.K. press and legacy 98x owners. Those who actually own the 718 love them and have nothing but praise - but heck, they don't know any better. I mean who wouldn't want a sportscar that is faster, quicker, better handling, better steering, better braking with more modern electronics than earlier models. Oh, but the sound sucks

It's my understanding the 718 cars are not selling well. Porsche is staying afloat by keeping 991 sales steady, and increasing sales of their SUVs, especially the Macan. A few years ago, everyone thought Porsche was nuts to market an SUV - how times have changed!

I am waiting to see when Porsche will begin offering self driving cars ... in Porsche fashion this would be a significantly priced option ...

Boxster sales have been consistently down in the US but caymans are selling slightly better for some reason. Maybe the shift in pricing.. putting the Boxster above the cayman?

Will be interesting to see how Boxster sales do when the weather gets nicer.

I thought the review was good up until the point Chris Harris started dissing the 4-pot and doing his legendary (yawn) drifts. Seriously, I like Harris but his pointless drifting is getting really old. What a stupid thing to put a car through.

As for the 4-pot? I was out at our local PCA AutoX last weekend and a couple of guys had two new 718s, one base and an an S, and they sounded GREAT. At no time did I say "Oh. That sounds like a Subaru". The only guys complaining about the 4-pot were OLD guys. The new younger Porsche owner appears to have either never owned or driven a 6-pot or really don't care, and have an EXCEPTIONAL Porsche with the 718.

Just my opinion (and I'm an old guy who's owned a couple of Porsches).

Viva the variety.. In this month's Excellence one person in the mail section was moaning about how the 944 didn't even look like a Porsche. I had just as much fun driving my 944 as any other Porsche I have owned and I loved the lines too. Sure it certainly didn't sound anything like the Spyder which makes awesome pops and burbles and on throttle sounds angry. That doesn't mean I would ever tell someone driving a four cylinder Porsche is bad or their car sounds anemic or that their choice was awful.

As another old guy that's owned many Porsches and now own a 718BS with manual transmission, I can assure prospective owners that this indeed is an exceptionally good Porsche. It doesn't sound like my CGTS, but I find it a noticeably improved car. But what do I know, I can't drift like Chris Harris.

True, and I agree. I wouldn't even consider paying $100K for a well equipped 718S Boxster. I'd rather stretch and pay another $10-15K or so for a 991.2.

I dont care about the 718.

My 981 spyder will be the last Porsche I ever own.

I had the 914-6 from 1987 - 2015

Let me say this, and I have said it before... A Porsche na engine can last 27 years if really well taken care of. I treat my cars like a sail boat. Drive on nice days. Weekend getaways.

A Porsche turbo motor cant do that.

Spoiler

I think because the Cayman is the successor to the original 911, before it became a GT car instead of a sports car. It's smaller, more nimble, better handling, more fun, and pretty much kicks the 911s butt in every category except speed around the track. After owning a 981 Spyder, I test drove a new base Carrera and I couldn't believe the rattling, the rough ride, and understeer. Anyone who drives the cars with an open mind instead of looking to fulfill their bucket list with an automotive icon will recognize the 981/718 is the better car.

After some thought, and a review of Chris's online Boxster S review I decided to summarise it. Here goes:

steering—fantastic

more support in the chassis—corners flatter but ride hasn’t deteriorated, comes alive with the extra torque, fantastic

can’t fault the brakes, fantastic

They’ve made the Boxster worse. This thing is inert.

Porsche has made the Boxster faster and a bit better.
There’s a whole lot more fun.

I can’t deny that for a turbo engine the throttle response is brilliant.
Lack of accuracy in throttle response.

PCM is superb.

Roof mechanism—best in class.

(Complaints about the sound--including that he can't hear the turbo whine.)

My take:
The only thing that makes sense of it all is his statement at the beginning that he’s confused.

We had a 718 Boxster Base in not too long ago for some product development and have come out with a full product line. The sound is most definitely not that of the N/A Flat 6, and stock was quite boring. But, we wouldn't necessarily call it bad after spicing things up a bit. Here are some clips of our Supercup Turboback and Streetsport Catback system to reference.
