What is going on with the 718 market?
Have been searching for quite a while for a 718 Boxster and Cayman and the market seem to go smaller and smaller. First fact I have observed, is that the 718 sales in US have been declining since the model has been launched. The latest number I have seen was that year over year, there were selling 50% less compared to prior year. It seems that Porsche reacts accordingly and delivers less vehicles to the US and this is what is currently reflected on the market. There are hardly any base 718 Boxster in the lower price range and also the used/cpo market looks pretty thin. Any idea what is going on? Also any idea when it will be possible to custom order the 2020 718?

Well, it's official, I picked the car up on Saturday. Have not had any time to post, partially because I've been out enjoying the car and also because...well...family, life, etc.
Please meet my new baby (sorry for the rushed and rather crappy pics), father and child are both doing great

People don’t want to pay 60k for a flat 4.

Porsche is an international company. They are selling them to the Chinese who are not preconditioned by Turbos, sound, displacement or 4 cylinders. They are selling plenty of them.

So if you want to spec a 4 cyl, you may be out of luck.
i called many dealers, local and nationally who told me as much.
Next gen will be hybrid and electric.

The C8 is aimed more at the 911 market where it will take quite a lot of sales from Porsche....
For a used 718, you need to cast a wider net. If you only look at dealer cars they are fewer and more pricy..

Yes he was. However, for an international company, we cant make broad conclusions from only an American isolationist perspective. China is the predominate market....especially for smaller displacement engines. They have clearly shifted 718 allocations from the US to China to meet demand and profits. The factory is at capacity. Who cares if US buyers don't want to buy a 4 cylinder turbo. Plenty of others do.
That is the answer to the OP's question. Porsche is selling all they can make.

Price? If I can build a loaded boxster gts to my like in 90-100 range I'd have no problem doing it, but instead I'm looking at 115-120k

The new cars available at lots is reducing as no new 2020 gts , s and base are being built . The shifting of cars to other markets is true , it has happened with 911 and now with 718 which is doing well in other markets . I always had a flat 6 ,981 boxster s and now 991.1 c4s cab. I like the 4 cyclinder bassier sound and easier on my ears and torque is nice , so as someone said above it is preference and dealers in USA are not giving away theirs new cars now ( max 8- 13 percent discount ) due to limited inventory

Supply and demand- a force almost as strong as gravity. Porsche has allocated supply to where demand is. There are lots of sports cars out there and lots of used Porsches. Keep searching you'll find something you like.

However, there are substantial discounts available for the 718 Cayman/Boxster. The norm seems to be at least 10% in this area, maybe more if it has been on the lot for a while. That may be moot since the dealers are not taking orders for anything other than GT4's and Spyders. I think if you can find a car sitting at a dealer that meets your specs you will have no problem getting it down to the price you desire.

Some people don't want to pay it, others are more than willing to buy a 4 cylinder that is faster than the previous 6 cylinder generation and, according to Porsche, every bit as fast as the GT4/Spyder. I get that people here don't like turbo engines or the sound of the 4 cylinder but it is all subjective.

I have always felt that the 718 market - and I'm sure others as well - is what Porsche makes it. How many times have you heard of people that are unable to get an allocation, or they must wait "x" months for it. It happened to me and it certainly changed both my schedule and ultimately what car I am now driving.
Porsche is a production limited manufacturer so what they offer, when and where they offer it, determines long term sales charts. I don't believe the drops in numbers from year to year are necessarily truly representative of demand - it's really only representative of what they can manufacturer and/or how they balance that scale.
