718 Boxster as an enthusiast car.
Hello Rennlisters. I am a retired Porschephile currently with two 928's - '91 GT and '83 Euro S 5speed. I've been studying the 918 Boxster and Cayman of late and am considering a 2017 S with PDK on Craigslist. What are the downsides of an 8000 mile 718. What should I be looking for? Thanks in advance, Rod

There are no downsides to owning a 718. 8000 miles is nothing. It will last over 300k.
You should be looking for something that makes you feel alive.
...I think I answered all of your questions. You are welcome.

No downsides whatsoever. Just got in from a hot drive in my 2018 718CS, which, incidentally, is just about to tick over 8000 miles. One of the best handling cars on he planet at any price point, fast as stink, beautiful lines. Pure fun. Pure quality. And a purer sports car than the recent 911s. I'm not knocking the deserving icon, but (with the exception of the GT variants), the 991 and 992 have evolved into grand tourers. You've got that well covered with your 928s. There is a cadre of flat six snobs who decry the turbo 4 and don't like the sound. I don't get that. While I get the beauty of the naturally aspirated flat 6 wail, I love the sound of my 718. It plays rock 'n roll with instant power delivery. The flat sixes play jazz with a more gradual crescendo.

I bought my 2017 CS with 8K on the odometer in December. It has over 13K now, with several spirited mountain drives, two autocross events, and two brutally hot track days at Virginia International Raceway. It has met and exceeded all expectations in my first 5K with it. I have zero regrets purchasing this car.

For the OP, the main drawback may be that you will spend less and less time in the other cars!

Oh, man....
Test drove a 2016 Boxter and a 2017 Cayman today...
Now I see the difference between the 4 cyl and the 6. The 6 cyl is so much more fun and has such a better exhaust sound.

Last over 300k?! Based on what? Have you looked at Porsche's track record on engine longevity? It's laughable! Have we forgotten about IMS, scored cylinders, and "D-chunk" already? Simply put, these engines are too new to know. IMO Porsche quality isn't what it use to be. However, I think this car will be pretty trouble free up until the warranty, but after that... I would probably sell it and get another one under warranty. The 718 is a blast to drive, but make sure you're covered with a warranty.

That's purely subjective. The sounds are different - no better, no worse - all according to what you like. As far as fun, again, subjective. The low end torque of the T4 may be better for urban driving, the higher revving NA 6 might be better on back roads or tracks. There is no right and wrong in this - it is simply a matter of preference.

You are so right!
Spent some more seat time in the 718 and bought it!
Just a better total package.

Downsides? The usual.
1.) Once the car is out of warranty, and, if you don't do your own work, the bills from a dealer will be eye watering.
2.) Thousands of people, male, female, ..., will throw themselves at your car taking selfies, gawking and telling you they love your car.
3.) Dog won't fit in the nonexistent backseat so your SO will need to stay home.
