718 Competition?

Sports car buyers don't typically cross shop Corvettes and Porsches, but this mid-engined 500HP C8 may be the exception.

Hard to tell from camo shots, but it looks awesome. It'll never have the feel of a 718 or 981 though.

I agree but having a md-engine will help. The next challenge will be the weight. If GM can keep the C8 to no more than 3300 lbs, it will be formidable.

Competition is always good. It beats the heck out of regulation for improving things. Bravo!

I can't wait for the C8. No interest in buying one at the moment, but curious to see what Chevy brings to the market.

I think you'd have to be nuts (or ignorant) to buy one for a few years. It's been in development forever and there are still HUGE problems with the platform.

Also, no manual transmission...

Also waiting patiently to see the unveiling of the new mid-engine C8 Corvette. Not sure if it will be a good competitor for the 718, likely more vs. the 992.

Seems that the new Supra will also present some new competition along with its BMW cousin.

I think you just insulted the Corvette crowd. ;) The C8 will be a competitor to the 911 not the 718.

Kind of both isn't it? I know when I was car shopping most recently and landed on a 981S, I test drove a new Corvette Grand Sport, 981, 981S, and 718/S. I'm sure 911 buyers may go to the dark side too, but it will take some sales from both 718 and 992 IMO. I looked at 991's too but decided I'd rather have a 981S than a base 991 for similar money, and couldn't justify the significant price delta for a 991S. Anecdotal, but still.

‘vette is more-directly competition with the 718 due to 2-seat-only design and price point. 2+2 configuration of 911 opens market for those that need the +2 for whatever reason (e.g. “See Honey? I can take the kids to day care...”, etc.) So while there’s a lot of overlap on the Venn Diagram there’s a bit of the 911’s area that doesn’t overlap with either the ‘vette or 718.

’vette is a lot of car-fun bang for the buck. It’s a (tasseled and sequined) War Hammer vs. Rapier argument.

CaymanSinAR 03-17-2019 05:30 PM

The Vette *should* be competition for the Cayman based on price and configuration but there is a reason you always see it competing against the 911 in shootouts. In the hands of professional drivers the Corvette is on another level.

I’d rather have a Boxster/Cayman though. Spent some time in a friend’s C6 Grand Sport and C7 Stingray. Came really close to buying a 7MT C7 Grand Sport just for the heck of it (they are stupid affordable). Got a 991.2 instead. Decided I’d rather try PDK twin turbo Porsche alongside 6MT NA Porsche.

I need to swap my BGTS/911 with a friend that has a C7 for a week or so. Curious to see if I could live with the interior and get used to the enormous feel of the Corvette.

My main point of curiosity with the C8 is its personality. Will it be docile and balanced like a Cayman or borderline homicidal like current Corvettes?

That and reliability.

First year vettes don't have the best reputation long term...

Oh I expect the first couple of years to be nightmarish in terms of reliability. No question about that. But I’m also prepared to give them a pass because this is such a huge departure and new platform. Heck, I’m willing to give them until the first refresh.

Just the expense of buying all those white shoes and matching belts would deter me from buying the Corvette - just kidding. The size of the Corvette, I think, makes it more a competitor for the 911 rather than the 718/981. With the 992 getting larger, the size seems more akin to the Corvette. I'm thinking that most 911 buyers are not cross shopping the Corvette but the Corvette will certainly appeal to some. I guess the final price point will determine which Porsche shoppers might buy the Chevy if the performance meets the hype.

The 981/718, 991 and C7‘vette are actually pretty close to the same size. The C7 is 3-ish inches wider and a tad lower than a 991 4GTS so it looks a lot bigger. The C5 and C6 ‘vettes were more-than-a-bit larger.

We’ll see what the C8ME brings to the table.
