Default Are here any fomer 981 driver?

Hi,

was wondering if there are any former 981 driver here who switched to 718 and could tell a little about their experience. I am currently driving a 2014 Boxster but was thinking to lease a 718 cayman as daily driver. I test drove the 718 boxster about a year ago but was really missing the sound. Wondering if in the long run this becomes less important. Thanks in advance, John.

I’ve seen several members say they get used to it and learn to like it. Doesn’t hurt that in pretty much all other aspects the 718 is the better car.

I’ll add my two cents, but from a slightly different perspective.

I have a manual 2015 Boxster GTS. When I wanted a new daily to replace my BMW I got a PDK 2017 911 Carrera. So NA manual versus PDK twin turbo.

Today was the the first time I’ve really taken them both out on the same stretch and given them the business. Route was 12 minutes out and 12 minutes back. Windows down and sunroof open on 911. Top down on BGTS.

Went out and back back in the 911. The PDK hurts the fun factor for canyon carving; even when using paddles. Sound was nothing special.

Went out in the BGTS... and just kept going. Everything about it is incredible. I love the way the NA pulls and the wail is otherworldly.

I love the PDK turbo as a daily though. I have it set up in Individual mode. Sport drivetrain, comfort chassis, sport exhaust off. Perfect for every situation. Having torque on tap all the time is awesome for a daily driver.

I won’t give up my 981, but if the primary purpose of your vehicle is a daily driver the 718 makes a lot of sense.

Having owned a base 981 Cayman and a base 718 Cayman, the 718 is better in almost every way. Of course the sound of the flat six was great, but the gearing was super long and it felt slow and underpowered. The power from the base 2.0 turbo really brings this chassis to life. The one thing that I feel is a must is Sport Chrono on the 718. Driving in Sport Plus turns on the anti lag feature and really enhances the throttle response. Now with the announcement of the Cayman T (assuming it comes to your market) there’s more of a reason to switch, as it provides all of the must have options as standard and at a good discount. Given the choice today between that same 2.7 flat six and the 2.0 turbo, I would absolutely choose the 718’s 2.0 turbo.

I had a 2014 981 Boxster S and currently have a 2019 718 Boxster S. I ordered both cars and they are configured almost exactly the same. IMO the 718 S is better in every regard (flame suit on). This is my sixth Porsche over the last 25 years ranging from a 1985 911 Carrera, 996 Carrera, 997 Carrera S, GT3 etc. Granted the 718 does not have the classic flat 6 sound but the 2019 S comes standard with Sport Exhaust & has a deep rumbling sound and with the sport button on pops & crackles like a F1 car. The 718 S is very fast and substantially more fun to me than the 981 S was. I did love the 981 S but I had my GT3 prior to the 981 S and the 981 always felt very under powered to me. Of my Porsches owned my two favorite for sound only were my 85 Carrera & the GT3.

My 718 Cayman is my first Porsche and I learned to love the sound immediately. And that’s not the only thing I love either. I love the power, the handling, the taught ride and the list goes on.

One thing I’m really glad the car has is Apple CarPlay. All my music streaming apps work great and Waze navigation with real time traffic and road/police conditions is a huge advantage here where I live.

981 Boxster, 981 BS and now a 718 BGTS here. I was all amped up to get a 718 when they came out. I raced a few, but the ones I drove didn't have the PSE...which was a major letdown (for me anyway). On my 981S I had a Borla, which was a kick in the pants to listen to, so when I heard the 718 for the first time I was very disappointed. Fast forward to now, the GTS sounds fantastic. I couldn't be happier

What was it like getting used to four cylinder sound? I'm interested in hearing more responses.

If you just take it for what it is, and don't compare directly to the wailing flat 6, it's quite easy. I love the mechanical elements and turbo whoosh it emits, in addition to the cracks, pops and burbles in Sport mode. Being objective about the entire package is probably the key here. In every way (sans sound), the 718 is a better car (to me). I just got back from driving at PEC in LA, and I'm so impressed with the platform as a whole. My wife had a 718 BGTS, I had a 991.2 GTS...as I have been thinking about my next P-car....and quite honestly, I prefer my 718 BGTS. I know, heresy! But I just love the mid engine platform and what Porsche is doing with it. Sound included (on my BGTS with PSE).

I have driven several 981 BS manual and PDK CPO cars searching for my first Porsche. My search started in 2016. I drove several 718 B & BS. No interest in GTS (flame suit on). I just equipped my 2019 BS as a GTS w sport tech and 15 fewer ponies. Car was $5k below the GTS w/o Alcantera which was must have for my use. I loved free NA 981 sound and pull through the revs. Torque below 4K was underwhelming. The 718 pulls from 2k. Driving closed road curves in 2-3 gear sold me on the 718. The torques comes on low and flat rocketing the 718 from corner exit to entry. IMO sound of 718 w crackle pop of sports exhaust is great. I ponied up and ordered the 718 BS in Apr 2018. My previous experiences were Mustang 5.0GT, Corvettes, and Ms.

I find the 718 easy to drive quick and a blast to drive.

I have a 2014 Boxster S and a 2018 911. Not quite the same comparison but I've also driven 718s on the PEC track.

The sound is not as good but it is not bad either. The 718 is better in every other respect than a 981. You wont be disappointed in the 718 at all. The higher torque is addicting.

I was originally dissappointed in the 718 because it went turbo and 4 cyl.....but after I drove it, I was sold. It's a great car. I hope Porsche keeps making them.

I've had '08 987 RS60 Boxster Spyder, 987.2 Boxster Spyder (PDK), 987 Cayman R, 981 Cayman S (PDK), 981 Boxster Spyder, and now the 982 Boxster GTS (PDK) which is my wife's new car. I also have a 991.2 Targa 4S which is an amazing ride. Just got the GTS and am now starting break in. But it drives nice, feels solid, steers well, and ergonomics are nice, thanks in part to the 18-way sport seats. So far the sound is a little odd and the torque while immediate is still missing a nice linear power curve. I'm sure this car will probably be every bit as quick as my 981 Spyder was, but won't compare in visceral intensity. The 981 does have some issues and newer is nicer. I still prefer some of the "special" 987s over both the 981/982 for driver enjoyment. I guess more to follow when I've had a chance to push the GTS a bit.

997 Carrera S with PCCB / C7 GrandSport 7speed manual / Shelby GT350 / Boss 302 Laguna Seca just some of the vehicles in the garage last 5 years etc. - couldn't stand the last gen Cayman as a driver - thought it was a dog - had one in my garage as a loaner for 2 days - couldn't wait to get it out and get the 997S back. Drove a 718 base and 718S back to back last November - world class sports cars - both of them. Took delivery of a 718 Cayman in December great addition to the stable.

I traded my 2009 997 S for a '14 Cayman S. Both were PDK. The Cayman's PDK was lightning fast compared to the 997S but underpowered. Only kept it 6 months and traded it for a near new and loaded Cayman R with PCCB. The Cayman R was far better than both the 981 Cayman S and 997 S in precision handling and cornering, and steering, which I appreciated most, and just more enjoyable to own and drive. What a great car the Cayman R is. I really appreciate when Porsche makes something special beyond the larger production cars.
