Default 2020 Cayman

Let the speculation begin!! Since the 2019s were revealed this week, time to think about the MY2020 versions. Theoretically, they should come out a year from now.

-Several members believe a complete remodel is on the way. One year out and no test mule photos make me wonder if that is true. Do we have any actual data to support the idea a full redesign is happening?

-Alternatively, despite external appearance, 718s were the remodel and only a refesh is due in MY20?

-GT4 and Spyder are the last pieces to fall into place for the current gen. They seem imminent and likely MY19s. That signals then end of a generation. Has Porsche ever sold GT4s or GT3s for more than a single model year in the US?

Has anyone seen any evidence of test vehicles spotted anywhere? I find it unusual that if a full redesign was due for the next model year, there is no evidence. Lack of GT4/Spyder release and upcoming Cayman T makes me think a redesign wouldn't come until at least the 2021 Model Year for the US.

"Has Porsche ever sold GT4s or GT3s for more than a single model year in the US?"

The GT4 has only been sold once for one year, so not much to go on, but GT3s have been sold for multiple years as the same car. 991.1 was sold for what, 3 years? 997.2 for a couple years, right? 997.1 for a couple years as well. 996 for a few years.

Default Will the next Cayman/Boxster be All-Electric?

It seems that other than the GT4, Spyder and Cayman T, which appear to be based on the current 718 model, there has been very little talk about a next generation. We should certainly be seeing the test mules out running around by now. There is speculation that there will be no new gas-powered Cayman/Boxster. Why, I don't know, except that the 911 now outsells both models together. Who knows if that will continue with the new 992. The new 911 is, at least in my opinion, now a full GT car, almost a small two-door Panamera. That leaves the 718s as the true sports cars for Porsche. Could it really happen that Porsche will simply make minor changes in the 718 going forward, then drop an electric-only new sports car on us in about 2023?

What do you guys think?

By whom? I haven't read anything along those lines.

Extremely unlikely. That's only a handful of model years away, look how long the Taycan to go from concept to production. If your speculation were true Porsche would dropping a concept of an electric Cayman now to test the waters. Even still, the Taycan is a supplement to the Panamera, not a replacement.

I've been on the lookout for next-gen 718 rumors and I can confirm that there are basically none. This report from two years ago indicates that the next generation would go into production during the second half of next year. However, given when the article was written and the fact that these timelines were not set in stone, I wouldn't be surprised if the schedule was off by six months to a year. We have not seen a single prototype of the next generation anywhere as far as I know. Dealers are saying the 718 GT4 will be delivered late 2019, which indicates a possible 2020 model. Similarly, the 981 lasted from MY 2013-2016, which means the current 718 likely would at least match from MY 2017-2020 (four years), implying a MY 2021 release for the next generation.

I was hoping the next gen was right around the corner, however I tend to agree with NOVA718's statement at the top of the thread about a MY 2021 showing. That is assuming business continues along as usual with Porsche; the 718 hasn't been selling terribly well and Porsche's priorities appear to be elsewhere. Best case scenario I believe we can expect a good update like we've grown accustomed to, at the very least along the lines of the most recent Macan facelift update. However if it does come out MY 2021 I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a 718 version of the new Porsche advanced cockpit and more substantial design changes, as the 718 is now the oldest in Porsche's lineup.

Looks like Porsche isn’t sure it wants to spend the R&D of developing a new model and thinking of killing it after the current generation. That’s probably why there’s no rumors and prototypes out.

I have no inside information, just an opinion from the latest issue of 911 & Porsche World. I am conerned, because there are sufficient indications with the overall direction in which Porsche seems to be heading. I have no desire for an electric Porsche. Or the new 911, for that matter.

Dropping the 718 would have a negative impact on their CAFE average. I could see them sharing a platform with other manufacturers though.

That Automobile article from almost a year ago points to the gas particulate filter (GPF) and the quieter mufflers as the reasons Porsche is considering dropping the 718. Does that strike anyone else as ludicrous? We know the 2019s are being delivered with GPFs in Europe and the UK, so it seems Porsche has been willing to bite the bullet for that design and production expense. Quiet mufflers and GPFs are something every manufacturer will have to deal with, so Porsche is on a level playing field with everyone else on dealing with the issue.

And where's this notion coming from that sales are in the dump? At least in the North American market they look to be holding pretty steady (from http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2018/05...les-figures/):

If you compare the 718 sales with Boxster sales, they've nearly doubled what the Boxster was managing in the US. (See same site for the details.)

I'm smelling a lot of FUD around here…

Well, Looks like this question has been answered. It will soldier on. Hopefully the GT4 and Spyder will be offered for multiple years. Well, looks like the 981 platform may be the longest one in use by Porsche, outside of the original 911

I think this is the best outcome we could realistically hope for. My guess it that it will get a slight face lift for the 982.2, similar to the Macan (rear brake light that goes across the whole back and updated/larger infotainment screen), Maybe, since this is most likely the last generation of the Boxster/Cayman as we know it, they will finally release a GT4 RS or other cool special editions.
