Drive mode selector knob on steering wheel

Has anyone attempted to remove and paint the knurled drive mode ring? pending the accent color (dials, seat belt, etc.), I think it would really tie it all together and give the interior a more sporty look.

I found the attached image on the TechArt website. I think the mix of colors in this case is not in good taste. However, I do think this red knob by itself, on a stock GT sport steering wheel, along with guards red seat belts and dials, would look really nice.

I was wondering the same thing, especially after seeing the following one painted in Irish Green, which was a CXX Option:

I think that the steering wheel needs to be removed since I recall when I had mine off it appeared the entire assembly could be removed but at the time I was not considering it so I did not pay close attention. Maybe a parts diagram would help.

Does this steering wheel work on the 981? The drive mode selector will work? Thought it only came on 982/991.2 cars

Posted in the wrong forum? That's great for 718 owners, or one of the .0002% of folks who did a conversion.

For what it's worth, I actually like that first pic. Would like great in a Miami Blue car.

I actually did this recently, I bought a spare knob off eBay, and tried to take it all apart, I got half way thru it but I was not able to pull out just knob off the whole assembly (it has these 4 internal tabs and as much as I tried, I could not pry them to free up the knob without risking breaking the whole switch). I put it back together and went on and masked it all off allowing me to paint the knob. I used a 2K spray can and went for it. I think it actually turned out really nice, but if I ever get tired of it, I still have the original to swap. If anyone figures out how to disassembly the knob, please post it. There has to be a way cause I see TechArt has wrapped the knob in Alcantara too.

The knob pulls straight off - took me 2 seconds to take off, get painted and push right back on:
