Do you have a remanufactured engine?
I'm not posting this thread to begin to try and prove anything, and if anything, may well just add to the heaps upon heaps of speculation that dates well beyond even when my Carrera was assembled.
If yes, then questions for you:
-Engine size - 3.4 or 3.6 (3.6)
-What mileage/date was it replaced? (13K miles/April 2003)
-How many miles on the remanufactured engine? (34K)
-Covered by factory warranty or sourced on your dime? (Factory)
-Any problems? (None)

Ben,
Excellent topic, this group is big enough that it might be able to generate a reliable statistic. I wonder if you might change it to a poll, and ask everyone to vote yes replace (with your recommended stats) or no replace. That way a proportion can be generated, and info on life.

GReat idea Ben. We need a database of materials. Maybe we could cross reference 6Speed and Renntech. Also, maybe you should start a new thread with a difference title. Perhaps, one that states - "The Official 996 Engine failure database"
I really think this info would be very helpful. We might even show a trend in manufacturing.

I'm not interested in putting together any sort of poll or attempt gathering "statistics" as I feel the internet is not an appropriate forum to gather this sort of data as someone will attempt to draw some conclusions based on it (no doubt). I just don't want my name behind this type of speculative effort; we have enough of this here. However, if any of you guys want to start one, I'll have no reservations participating.
To be brutally honest, this thread is somewhat self-serving as this is an attempt at getting stories of reman engines failing since I have one. I am guessing others in the sames shoes as I share this interest.
I do like the idea of having engine size. Edited above. I hope you guys can understand.
Best,
Ben

Paging Dell.........Paging Professor Dell,
Please explain to everyone why this data will be meaningless....
Here's my info just for the hell of it.
- Engine size - 2.7 and 3.6
-What mileage/date was it replaced? Never
-How many miles on the remanufactured engine? None, all miles on original motors
-Covered by factory warranty or sourced on your dime? N/A
-Any problems? None

yep
99 c2, replaced at 33,000 catastrophic failure (cracked cylinder or porous block).
16,000 on replaced engine in 2004.
PO fought Porsche for months to get partial payment/discount on reman.

Very worthy effort, but there's one thing you absolutely need to measure specifically, and that's why the motor was replaced. Remember, Porsche replaced many under warranty just for seal problems. And many of those were, as it turns out, replaced unnecessarily due to a flawed measurement tool. Speaking for myself, I would only really be interested in engines that were replaced because they grenaded, not because they leaked.

-Model year - ('99)
-Engine size - (3.4)
-What mileage/date was it replaced? (105K miles/Spring 2005)
-How many miles on the remanufactured engine? (28K)
-Covered by factory warranty or sourced on your dime? (previous owner)
-Any problems? (None)
-Reason for replacemnt (excessive RMS leaks(RMS replaced every 12k miles))
