Default 996 Question is there a 3.8 upgrade

Hi,
My buddy hit somehting last night asn Porsche is telling him that the engine is trash and will need to be replaced.

This is a 2002 Targa, Is there a larger engine he can upgrade to while he is at it ?
I was thinking you can put a 3.8 in the car, but I could be wrong I really live over in the aircooled world , so Let me know

Also what was the cost of the two the replacement 3.6 and the 3.8

Thanks

Not easy to do. One would need a fabricator to do the work and you would have to replace most of the engine electronics. $$$$. Not really recommended. 3.4 --> 3.6 is much easier to do.

really? I thought it was the other way around. The electricals (especially e-gas) are more similar in the 3.6 and 3.8, I thought. My indy has two 3.8 engines he bought in case someone wants to upgrade from the 3.6.

deoxford,

The shop that did my 3.4 to 3.6 swap is in Atlanta. They can do the 3.8 as well. More $$ because regardless if you are e-gas already or not your DME version can't run the newer systems that are in the 3.8. 3.4 to 3.6 is pretty straightforward. 3.4 to 3.8 involves a lot more electronic systems including swapping to the newer instrument cluster and hvac, etc. PM if you want their contact info.

u are talking big bucks here. ruf is great but terribly expensive and autofarm is in the uk...the exchange rate will kill u plus the cost of shipping it here. alot of money for +/- 50hp increase, not worth it imo.

3.8 into a 2002-on car is a simple task.

Todd is correct, I have one in my 02 c4s, which I was able to do myself minus the tuning.

Guys,
Just a update, I have discoverd that the 3.8 is simple for this car.
And I have found a shop here in Atlanta that does it.
Matter of fact it is my shap and they have a Cayman in there right now with the 3.8

I am waiting to find out the cost. I am sure it will be cheaper or the same as what the Porsche dealer was saying for the 3.6 replacement ~12k

That's good news. I may do the same thing one day, but hopefully not soon.
