Default RHD cooling expansion tank $614USD can you believe it!!!

I have been recently toying with the idea of replacing my expansion tank as it has a few stress cracks. Today I dropped into my local Porsche dealer in Hong Kong to price the tank out - low and behold they want 4800HKD= $614USD. I asked why it was so expensive seeing as the LHD expansion tank equivalent is only $94USD. They said they are only charging what Porsche dictates. What a scam! I could see them charging more but six times more is just BS. I phoned Porsche in th UK and its a little more reasonable at 263 pound= $517USD. I'm pretty p***ed off!

I would at that point definitely redesign the system. I've wanted to do it for years anyway. Use the windshield washer space and place a tank there. Where ours are sandwiched in, is not a good spot.

Ebay has a bunch of them for various cars. here's one with a sender if you want to keep that feature. It also has a fill at the corner, and looks like it might stuff down in the fender area. The 928 tank is pretty generous, even though it's for a 5L V8.

I agree the price is due to the number of RHD car produced but six times the price is just s**t. I am considering having someone build a custom expansion tank possibly out of aluminum. I have to ask around and see what I can come up with. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

"Necessity is the mother . . ." I would be looking for an alternative. If you don't like non-Pcar parts, then JB Weld, or epoxy for plastic. Anybody know technicals for our plastic; it would seem you are ahead of the game if the cracks are not open? Apply, pressure test, happy motoring.

That quoted price puts the coolant tank in the same ballpark as the MAF.

A while back I measured the coolant tank from a Volvo 850 and it appeared to be the same dimensions but would need surgery to fit the sender.

My coolant tank is showing its age so might be time to grab a couple of alternatives from a recycler and experiment.

To build one that you could check visually would probably be just as expensive. As Sterling mentions, it's market economics at work here: supply & demand.

Guy here in Oz had one built in alloy to fit, ~A$220 IIRC. Along with an alloy radiator, so that may have helped the price.

JP do you have any info on where he had it done? I get down to OZ often and an alloy expansion tank might fit the ticket.
