In the past I've used the following oils in my 81
Mobile 1 15w-50
Castrol Syntec 5w-50 (only when I know I will be driving the car into sub arctic temps)
Royal Purple 20w-50

I switched to Delvac / Diesel Truck 5w-40 this year.

Oil pressure before would bounce between 1.5 - 2.5 bar at idle (once warmed up).
With the Delvac it's rock solid at 2 bar at idle.

Not sure this means anything - just felt like sharing. Someone mentioned the "bouncing" on the gauge could have been the pressure relief valve varying oil pressure. With the 5w-40 it's more consistent.

Good to know. I noticed that Advance auto near me stocks 1qt M1 T&SUV 5w40 and they said they can get the 5qt jugs. It's supposed to be the same as Delvac 1 and much less expensive. I've also been considering trying LubroMoly/LiquiMoly next oil change.

I switched to Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40 a few weeks ago. I've only driven the car a couple of times since, but noted it consistently showed right at 2 bar at warm idle. Air temps have been in the 70's and 80's. I'm still waiting to see what kind of warm idle pressure is present when it gets really hot this summer.

The only oil pressure problem I've ever experienced in a 928 was in my previous 90GT during stop and go traffic on a 105 degree summer day. My low oil pressure light came on for a brief moment while idling at a stoplight. I was running Mobil 1 15W-50 at the time.

I have a cool Delvac coffee mug I got at the Mid America Truck Show. They glazed over when I started asking about automotive oils and handed it to me to get me to go away. It's a safe bet they didn't tlak to too many Porsche drivers that day.

Just stocked up with 20 big jugs of Delvac and once I use up the Mobil 1 15w 40 that is what I will use.

Not sure I like Delvac, Godzilla uses more of it than the Synth Mobil One.

You can get Delvac branded oil? Which weight? I'm pretty sure that Mobil 1 Delvac is synthetic...you seem to be implying that Mobil 1 Delvac is conventional/"dinosaur" oil...can you post a pic of what you're using? I didn't know Delvac was available in the USA...

I've had the Delvac [M1 T&SUV] for almost a year now, soon to be changed. I've not noticed any real difference in oil pressure- 2-3 bar at warm idle. I used Castrol 20W50 before and was wary of oil leaks when I put in the Delvac; I've developed a small leak around the filler kneck where it meets the pan, but my seepage from around the oil pan gasket has stopped.

Man this stuff has really gotten black!

Think I might have even seen the jugs at Wal-Mart.
It's strange wandering in the truck and diesel section of the auto parts store looking for stuff for a supercar.

Either brand is a great choice since Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40 and Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40 are the same product branded differently for different markets.

The Mobil website indicates there are both synthetic (Delvac 1) and dino (Delvac 1300) versions available. I'm running the Delvac 1 5W-40 Synthetic per Doug Hillary's recommendation.

I bought mine from my local NAPA store. It had to be ordered, with a 4 gallon minimum. Total cost before tax: $123.80

Diesel Truck Oil is what we have around here. As far as I know Delvac labelled oil is not available in the US.

It's the same stuff so I was actually trying to keep the initial post less confusing

Delvac is available all over the US. They sell Delvac 1300 at several NAPAs I've been in and all Walmart stores. Delvac 1 is usually only available at places that supply big rigs.

Heinrich probably used Delvac 1300 (conventional) not Delvac 1 (synthetic).

I'll have to look around - the place I picked up my oil is a big supplier for farm equipment around here.

I thought it was mentioned in a different thread "Delvac" was for non-US markets. I stand corrected.

Been reading the front and backs of the oil jugs or Rotella and Delvac and couldn't see any mention of synthetic.
Maybe I'm staring at conventional oil (Delvac 1300) at the parts store.

I need the secret decoder ring for this stuff.
So does the synthetic stuff taste different.
