Might try Pete Jackson at Pete's Custom Coachbuilding in NE Ohio.

www.petescustomcoachbuilding.com

Or Terry Worick in Eagle Nebraska www.terryworickrestorations.com

Both of these guys have turned out beautiful restorations recently.

Stalltek in Wellman, IA... two Mennonite brothers, do amazing work in a converted barn in rural Iowa. Usually do 356's, but did my '73 914 since they'd known me for years. Not fast, but you don't want fast in that kind of work...

Just get ready to spend $$$$$! I don't know why it's no money to restore a VW, but a 356 will end up being close to $200k for a proper restoration. I guess they look at the value of the car and go from there

If you want a full blown, concours type restoration, yeh, you could spend $200K (see http://www.willhoitautorestoration.com/info.php - Willhoit is one of the best). However, if you want a nice paint job, new interior, and some fixing up, I think it could be done for $25,000-$35,000. Bare metal repaint can be well done for $10-15K, I think, new leather interior from Autos International for ~$7K (they also sell pre-made kits for less if you want to install yourself, and while there are other good shops, Autos International is generally considered one of the best), plus of course re-chroming as needed (not cheap), obviously disassembly / reassembly labor, whatever parts you need to replace, and if you need an engine rebuild that could run $10K-12K + for a very professional job. Partly depends if you want to pay a pro to handle and manage everything or whether you can do some disassembly and reassembly and cart the car around to the vendors yourself.

My '60 T5B coupe is in driver condition, matching numbers, with an aging cheap repaint over the original paint and needs a new interior (especially seats, which have aging vinyl covers which are splitting, but the good news is when the drivers seat split, I found the proper original matching seat covers underneath). Chrome is mostly passable though not perfect. If I move ahead (debating whether to do so or otherwise sell, don't have the time to spend with it), the above numbers are what I have in mind to do a decent restoration and end up with a nice, shiny driver. I have no interest in doing it concours style.

In the value curve of 356's, a T5 coupe is very low in the range. There is no way it would make sense to spend $200K on a high level concours restoration. But with the way I would do it, I could probably get the added expense out of it these days if I sold after a restoration.

A couple pix from a PCA event today at Stalltek in Wellman, IA. They're close to finishing this pre A split window coupe. It is beautiful. Didn't take a picture of a '55 speedster they just finished that is headed back to St. Louis...

They did my '73 914 and it is better than new...
