356 tyres
There have been some developments in what is available tyres for the 356 recently which you might be interested in. I am just talking about top quality period tyres. I don't get involved in cheapo modern tyres in all manner of different sizes. because people won't come to me if that is what they want. So:-
I think for ages the 165HR15 Michelin XAS has been the best tyre for these cars, and possibly still is. This tyre was developed to make cars of this period and earlier suited to the dual carriage ways that were being built. the XAS came out in 1965. I have had 2 cars fitted with XAS and they are great. http://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/page...helin-xas.html
In 1952 pirelli developed the Cinturato CA67. these haven't been made for a long time untill recently. The Cinturato is the progressive sports car tyre. the Cinturato will be the best tyre for wazzing round country lanes. They won't hold on the longest but they will be very progressive. http://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/page...rato-ca67.html
the new tyre for those that want a bigger tyre is again Pirelli (they are currently improving their classic range). I think in 1973 Porsche started to offer the 185/70VR15 Cinturato CN36. Personally if i had a 356 i would stick to 165HR15, but those who value road holding over handling the the CN36 is a new production of an important Porsche tyre http://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/page...elli-cinturato
then of course other really good 185/70VR15 tyres are Michelin XWX. Also OE 911 fitment and a great tyre http://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/page...helin-xwx.html
and Avon CR6ZZ which is a great road race tyer http://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/page...von-cr6zz.html
one of the advantages of the CR6ZZ avon is there is a wide range of other tyres with the same tread pattern such as 175/70VR15 that you can match up with http://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/page/avon-cr6zz

If you wish to have a tire of the proper size (165-15) these are the best available combination of sticky, dot approved and period looks. Exceptional quality.

I don't realy know what that means
Both Michelin and Pirelli make far better tyres. In fact i would suggest that Michelin and Pirelli are 2 of the worlds best tyre manufacturers. (but that is just my opinion.) So they are genuine exceptional quality. of course DOT and E Marked
The XAS was made in 1965 and the Cinturato CA67 was made in 1952 are actual period tyres. and as a result actually do have period looks.

In the same way that mini cooper from the 60's does have period looks. where as a modern Mini is a totally different beast made to a price.
If you try to make your Beatle look like a Porsche; it isn't a Porsche.
The lookey likey isn't the best.

Ooo Excellent!
Do you have any sexy pictures i can use for adverts.
However what is most important to me is how does it handle?
It is important to get the look right which the Pirelli does because the Cinturato was the most desirable sports car tyre to fit in the 50's and 60's. and it was staggeringly expensive so only the top end stuff fitted it and it was the upgrade to fit to a car.
but as a classic car driver the most important thing to me is how does it feel to drive?
