Default 356 Speedster value

I have the possibility of trading a car for a restored 1959 356 A Speedster, with period racing history. I haven't seen the car in person yet, but it's supposed to be a fresh restoration. We're still negotiating, but the owner of that car really wants the one I have. I just want to make sure we're in the same ballpark.

Hagerty's value currently is an average of $210K, (with a #2 car at about $275) and I'm wondering how accurate that is. IMHO, the racing history can only add to the value of a similar car with no or unknown history.

Finally, it looks like appreciation has been steady over the last few years. Any ideas on how the future looks for Speedster values?

What car are you giving him if the deal goes though?

As far as values go the surest way to lose money in the collector car game is to made deals based on perceived future value increases. If you like a car buy it at a price you think is a good deal today and enjoy it.

Hagerty values are generally correct but you have to be sure the condition, originality and history of the perspective car matches up. A #2 car maybe be worth $275k but just make sure the car you are buying is really in #2 condition.

Just FYI: Technically 59 isn't a speedster, it is a Conv. D where the D stands for Draus aka the body builder. The car does say speedster on the front fenders, but the actual speedsters, 1954-1958 were build by Reutter. A restored speedster with #s matching is north of $300. Drivers are in the $2xx,xxx range

There were a few Speedsters built in 1959, as race cars. The chassis number of the last one built in 1958 is 84922. 85501 is the first Convertible D chassis number.

Easy to tell the difference between Speedsters and D's: Speedsters have curving chrome windshield frames; D's have rectangular ones. D's came stock with coupe seats, not Speedster buckets. Speedsters have flimsier tops. D's have roll-up glass windows, not plastic side curtains. And D's weigh more because of the extra equipment.

D's weren't used to go racing nearly as much as Speedsters, and they aren't as sporty or sought after. $200K or maybe $250K is pretty much the ceiling for the value of D's. Speedsters can go much higher.

The Speedsters built in 1959 were all GT cars with most of them sporting the 4-cam engines ($2M plus). There were 7 or something push-rod Speedsters ($700K plus) but all in GT trim.
