Although it feels like a needle-in-the-haystack effort, I am interested in locating my father's old 356 Super 90. Unfortunately, I'm only able to provide these basic photos that I scanned from slides. My father no longer has any documentation, including VIN number, etc.

The car is an early '60's 356 Super 90 and was owned by my father, Frank Walter, from about 1964 to 1968. At the time, my parents were living in Maryland and my father was working as a technical advisor/trainer at Autoville Volkswagen in Silver Spring, MD. From what he remembers, he sold the car to someone from New Jersey. The exterior color was light ivory (not sure of the Porsche name) and the interior was red.

I would appreciate more information on this exact model, ie: paint name, a better approximation of the year, etc. If anyone can provide leads or point me in a better direction, I would be very grateful. I intend to also post this on the 356 Registry. While it's a long shot, I've have many thoughts of finding the actual car and possibly purchasing it.

This a Karmann "welded hard top" (not sure about this in English, sorry).
This is really uncommon with only 1747 made.

1961:
- 1600 S: chassis 200001 to 201048
- Super 90: chassis 201601 to 202200: You father's car was one of those 600 cars.

1962:
- 1600 S: chassis 202201 to 202299

a "notchback" coupe. i'm pretty sure it started life as a cabriolet and had a faactory hard top welded in place.i have not seen too many around, your best bet would be, as you said, post an email message on the 356 talk list. there are many informative sources that may know of the cars existence. sorry, most of my 356 books are at my office, but i'm pretty sure the 356 registry website has paint code and engine number info as well.

good luck with your search, finding the car can be done! this month's edition of our magazine has an article of an A coupe that was purchased in thailand, made it to the usa and now the original owner's grandson has been in contact with the cuurent ower to purchase it.

Thanks for the great info. I have a 356 book and presumed it to be one of the Karmann Coupes depicted. One of 600? Wow. It would be a dream to locate this car,regardless of condition.

As a slight update, I did exchange a number of emails with an employee at the Maryland DMV. Without a VIN she was not able to help, and also stated that since the registration goes back so far, the state may have purged its records. I did send another email to her with the MD license plate numbers (CW 9659).

I talked to my father a bit more and learned that he sold it to Freestate Volkswagen in either '67 or '68. The car was then purchased by a gentleman from New Jersey. From what he remembers, the engine blew while the new owner was driving it home....

I do have the original owner's manual in my possession now, and will continue the search. Next stop is the insurance company that handled my father's business for many years.

Stay on the hunt - it would be fantastic if you found it and better still if you were able to buy it.

If you haven't already, join the 356 Registry - the magazine alone is worth more than the cost ($35/year, I think). You can then search through the Registry's VIN database (you must be a member to access the database). You can even search ranges of VIN numbers, so you could methodically search all the Karmann hardtops. On my limited search, I found one with data back to 1979 in New Jersey (and one subsequent owner in NY in 1983) - VIN #201675. For many cars, there is no data, and for those where there is information, you could eliminate many because of location, original color, etc. I bet you could search the whole database for 600 cars in a few hours.
