Default 356 running rough

hi guys! My first post. First visit to the group! Hope to become a regular!

I have a recently acquired 356t5b with a 912 engine in it. It is running rather rough and heading to the shop but it’s driving season and I’m hanging to drive! The issue is inconsistent and now it’s changed! See the video for noises but basically over 2,000rpm the engine stutters like it’s missing a spark plug and has no power. Sitting at idle like in the video it’s rough and painful to hear- any thoughts?

Peter, congratulations on your purchase. You need to join the 356registry. These types of questions are asked all the time and the registry is the best source of information.

Alway start with a full complete tuneup. Valve adjustment, points plugs- keep condenser if it is good new ones can be bad out of the box. Carb adjustment is last. Set float levels at lower end of factory spec with todays gas. Nice basic carb tuning video here:
And don't forget 80% of carb problems are electrical-either distributor or wires.

I am not trying to hijack your thread but....

is there any advice on you tube where I could find how to clean the jets on the stock carbs?

Our problem is the car sits with fuel in it for a few months and then clogs the jets.

Are there modern carbs that would be better to run just so we could drive the car regularly

Modern fuel should not deteriorate enough in a few months to cause jets to be clogged. Maybe 6 or 12 months but not 2 or 3. See if your tank is clean, same with petcock. Consider new hard fuel lines. This of course is assuming that you have replaced all rubber lines with modern ETOH safe fuel line. Including the small line at the front of the tunnel and the small piece of line behind the fan housing.

I added an additional inline fuel filter for all the crud. Cleaning the jets is ease. Are you running Zenith or Solex carbs?
