Business idea - online 928 coaching and mentoring
I don't know if any 928 specialist has tried running a paid online coaching and mentoring service? But I think it can work.
As an example, I asked about my HVAC problem on the forum and got good suggestions. Trying to execute the suggestions highlighted my lack of knowledge. Simple things like finding the heater control valve took me an hour with the workshop manual, and I still have the question of how to check if it is closing properly.
If there was an online consultant that could walk me through the process step by step I would be happy to pay a reasonable fee. It does not have to be real time.
While the forum provide very handy guidelines, I feel I need more help than I can ask for and expect people to help me out of kindness.
It would also be handy if the service provider get to know the car over time and perhaps build up a database on specific cars.
At least when you then ask "What was the PO thinking?, you may be able to get an answer.
Any thoughts on this?

I'm happy to help you for free when I have the time available, and I'm sure there are other 928ers here in Oz who wouldn't mind a call either ... that's what 928 enthusiasts do for others who have the same affliction
The workshop manual is fragmented, and difficult to follow and extract info specific to your model first time.
Feel free to email me and I'll give you contact numbers.

I think you will find as you spend more time here (and you will!) that this forum pretty much works that way when needed. As you do some topic searches, you will find some epic problem-solving and repair threads. Some of the experts here are available to the rest of us above and beyond any reasonable expectations.

I agree that RL probably has all the "Been there done that" in some form or another, but sometimes it's more than just knowing the steps, it's someone to coach you through it as well (yes yes you really can do that, it's safe ) .. Talking generally here not 928 specific.
There again, I know members of the big 3 have been known to spend a fair bit of time on the phone without charge.
Another thought though if it is a paid service what sort of liability is involved? People love to sue.

In this case I think paid transportation to original poster's work shop would be in order.

Your initial idea makes sense, just that it really isn't necessary. Stick around here long enough and you'll see what I mean.
I was kind of thinking things might have been blowing over your head when I saw your posts related to the heater control valve. That's ok, we all have experienced that.
There are plenty of people around here with tons of knowledge, just for the asking. Sometime we forget our target audience might not be as knowledgable... so if someone post something you don't understand, just ask... most here are very willing to help and often times have photos and diagrams if needed.
Ok, that said. If I were in your shoes and I would go ahead and buy the $15 heater control valve and just replace it. Following is my reasoning... they all go bad, aren't very expensive, and by the time you get to it to really test it... it's just about as easy to remove and replace.
Also, your symptoms mirror failure mode; that is, everything worked fine until you used heat (in essence opening the valve, which technically happens every time you shut off the engine so not 100% sure that is relevant). Second, and probably more importantly, your RPMs dropped when pressing the AC button indicating the compressor was still engaging. If the AC clutch is actually engaging (which Wally described), that eliminates a large portion of A/C failure modes.
Sure there are a whole bunch of other potential things it could be. It's just that this is one of the cheaper and easier repairs that could make for a great budding DIY (do it yourself) project.

Yes.
Next Tuesday is Landshark night (second Tuesday of the month). Find out where your local 928 group meet (I can't recall whether they meet north or south of Bris.) and make sure you get there to meet them.
You'll find 928 owners typically work for beer, wine and food, and an excuse to drive their 928 somewhere A fair few of the QLD people work on their own cars.
(I'm assuming you're on the Aussie Landshark list already? If not, thats where you ask where the QLD chapter meet up)
