Want a Great Deal on a Brand-New Cayenne Diesel? Buy One “Used”

If you’re in the market for a new diesel Porsche Cayenne, this may be the opportunity of a lifetime.

Remember that little Volkswagen diesel scandal that made a headline or two this year? Well, because of it, U.S. regulators called for a stop-order, and Porsche Cars North America had to park nearly 1,500 new 2014-2016 Cayennes fitted with the Volkswagen Group’s 3.0-liter TDI V6 motor.

Now it sounds like a fix for those engines is in the works, which will bring emissions levels down to a level that regulators (and the ozone layer) can hopefully live with. Once that fix gets approved, Porsche is planning on selling the parked Cayennes as used cars.

“They will be low-mileage, very attractive used cars, based on the age of the car. There’s always a market for any car. You just have to get the price right,” Porsche America’s CEO Klaus Zellmer told Automotive News.

Once the repair is approved by the courts, Porsche will fix the remaining Cayennes, as well as the 10,000 or so affected diesels that were already sold to customers. Then Porsche will begin selling the new Cayennes as used, which could make for quite the bargain.

Zellmer also went on to say that Porsche America had gotten out from under a number of allocated diesel Cayennes, many of which got stuck in U.S. ports before finally being sent back to Germany. So that’s one less thing to worry about.

“So we’re actually in pretty good shape. Once we have the tactical fix, we’re rather confident,” said Zellmer.
