Vintage Porsche Race Cars Taking Center Stage at Mecum Kissimmee

Porsche 962

Some splendid cars are hitting Mecum’s auction block next month, but few are quite as compelling as these three vintage Porsche race cars.

There’s owning a Porsche; then there’s owning a couple of Porsches; then there’s collecting Porsches; then there’s collecting vintage Porsches; and finally there’s collecting vintage Porsche race cars.

If you’ve advanced to such upper echelons, then you may indeed need to start stretching your check-writing hand, because you’ll love this “trio of Porsche racing legends” for sale at Mecum’s upcoming Kissimmee auction.

Our friend Bradley Brownell recently highlighted the trio for The Drive (via Yahoo), and boy did he pick some beauties. These aren’t the only Porsches available at Mecum’s January 6-15 auction, but they’re certainly some of the most noteworthy.

First off, there’s this 1977 Porsche 934.5/935 Kremer K3, estimated to sell between $750k and a cool million. This baby saw more than a decade of hot motorsport action, including seven starts at the 12 Hours of Sebring. During that nice long run, it was professionally driven by the likes of Randy Lanier and Milt Minter, among others.

Next we’ve got  this 1989 Porsche 962, which was driven to victory by Derek Bell, Bob Wollek, and John Andretti at the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1989. Don’t expect this one to go cheap though, as it’s estimated to cost some lucky collector between $2M and $2.5M buckaroos. (What could it be about this car that makes me so thirsty?)

Finally, we’ve got something with a little less lineage, but quite the bright upside for future racing. This 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR was used for back-up and testing by Pro Speed Competion in 2007. Then it was campaigned in just three FIA GT races the next year. If you’ve got the means — likely between $275,000 and $325,000 — this car’s best racing could very well be in front of it. Though we certainly love to look at all the classic livery on the more vintage models, this one’s a blank slate, ready for you to make your mark.
