Top 10 Unloved Porsche Models That Now Everyone Wants
Not every Porsche is a hit out of the gate, but as time marches on even the most reviled models can make a comeback.
There are times when it seems Porsche can do no wrong. Over the years they have produced a lineup of exceptional automobiles. Their newest offerings from the new 911 Turbo S to the Cayman GT4 continue the tradition of excellence. However, even Porsche can come out with a model that every so often makes people wonder if they have lost the plot.
Going back through history we look at some of the vehicles that Porsche produced that got less than a warm welcome for one reason or another. Each one of these now would be a welcome addition to any Porsche enthusiast garage. Sometimes a Porsche is a hit from the day it is released. Other times, it takes years for the public to fully appreciate the model. However, in the end, if you wait long enough you will see that every Porsche is worth having. If you have others that you think should be on the list, lets us know in the Rennlist forums.
912
The venerable 911 was on the way, however, Porsche needed a model to bridge the gap from the 356 to the new 911 model. Enter the 912. Virtually identical to the 911 except it was powered initially by the 1.6L flat-four from the 356 SC. It may have done the job at the time, but when collectors started to snatch up older 911’s, the 912 was left behind. Why would you want the flat-four, when you can have the flat-six? Now that the early 911 is out of reach for many, the 912 has begun to pick up steam and is now a desired collector car in its own right.
914
Eventually Porsche wanted to replace the 912 with another sub-911 model that was a bit more distinct. The answer was the mid-engine 914. As this car was a joint venture between Porsche and Volkswagen, many saw the car as nothing more than a glorified VW. It also had styling that was not very Porsche-like compared to the 911 and 356 models. Today, even the base 914 has shot up in value in recent years as people appreciate the 914 for the simple sports car that it was.
924
Another Volkswagen and Porsche venture. In fact, Audi was in the mix as well as the 924 was built in their Neckarsulm plant and the engine was lifted from the Audi 100. This was another entry level model with too much non-Porsche involvement for many and the car was never very highly regarded. However, this was the beginning of the transaxle Porsche era and these cars are coming into vogue now. Prices are not sky high, and they likely never will be, but they are only going up from here.
