Porsche Mission E Spied Testing with Tesla!

With a pair of Teslas in tow, a group of Porsche Mission E prototypes are officially tolling around public roads.

Porsche came along and dropped a bombshell on the automotive world two years ago when it unveiled the all-electric Mission E. And now, we’re finally getting our first look at a pre-production prototype of the groundbreaking sedan. Fittingly, the mules were spotted tooling around public roads alongside their main EV rival – Tesla. That effectively puts to bed any doubts that Porsche is aiming its sights squarely at the high-performance EV manufacturer.

Even though we’ve known for some time that the Mission E was indeed headed for production, seeing a prototype on public roads is a critical step in the process of making the car a reality. But at first glance, these mules aren’t nearly as visually stunning as the Mission E concept. There’s no mistaking the sedan for anything but a Porsche, of course. But it’s definitely more Panamera than 911. Or some kind of futuristic spaceship.

It’s clear that Porsche wants spying eyes to think this is anything but a Mission E prototype, too. Just take a look at those fake rear exhaust tips. Yet, this is certainly no electric Panamera. The Mission E rides on its own unique platform, with a lithium-ion battery sitting in between both axles. The platform is also slated to see use in future models.

Porsche claims the Mission E’s all-electric drivetrain pumps out 605 hp, good enough to propel it to a 3.5 second 0-60 time and a sub-8 minute lap at the Nuburgring. And yet, the technical marvel’s base price will come in close to that of the Panamera – around $85,000. Currently, the first-ever electric Porsche is scheduled to go on sale in 2019 as a 2020 model. And by the looks of things, Tesla should be very worried.
