Rothmans Porsche 911 SC/RS Recreation Looks Ready to Rally
Bless the rains down in Africa or the snow up in Sweden with this amazingly realistic Porsche 911 Rothmans rally recreation.
The safari look is all the rage in the world of Porsche these days. But obviously, this rally-inspired off-road treatment is nothing new. Porsche and its many devoted racing teams were building these uber cool rides decades ago, dominating rally stages all over the world. That, of course, included the legendary Rothmans 911 SC/RS, which went on to enjoy great success in Group B racing.
To satisfy FIA homologation rules, 20 Rothmans cars were built in total. Five of them actually saw racing action, while the other 15 were sold as special edition, road-going cars. The gorgeous Rothmans livery 911 you see here isn’t one of those 20 cars, however. Rather, it’s an incredibly detailed, highly faithful clone that’s currently for sale over at Trissl Sports Cars.
This particular car began life as a regular old 1983 Porsche 911 SC in desperate need of attention. But instead of simply restoring it back to its original glory, Trissl decided to recreate one of their very favorite racing machines of all time. And who can blame them? Especially given how amazing the finished product turned out.
The team at Trissl reached out to some of the very best in the business to put this dream Porsche together. Martins Classic Cars in Huntsville, Alabama was tasked with rebuilding the 3.0-liter flat-six. That mill now packs custom ground racing cams, reworked Ollies Engineering heads, and various other goodies. The transmission and half shafts were fortified to handle the extra power, too.
Vintage Autocraft in Nashville, Tennessee handled the bodywork, and what a masterful job they did. The entire car was completely stripped, and original photos and measurements were used to faithfully recreate the famous Rothmans livery. Underneath, the Porsche uses custom Bilstein coilovers and Bremtek brakes to handle and stop. The team even went to the trouble of going with a snow and ice spec tire in the name of authenticity.
The end result of those efforts is one of the coolest Porsche recreations we’ve ever laid eyes on. And it isn’t just for show, either. We have no doubt this 911 could easily handle a rally stage, if the new owner dared give it a go. But then again, maybe it’s just too darn pretty to take the risk!
