Porsche biggest moments

We look back at the biggest moments from the past year for each Porsche model. Plus, we offer one prediction for each for 2022.

It is hard to believe but 2021 is almost in the books. It was another challenging year on a lot of fronts. Of course, the pandemic again dominated the headlines. And supply chain issues made it extremely difficult to put a new Porsche in your driveway this year. However, there were still many bright moments in Porsche land in 2021. There were new models released, and significant updates made to others. In addition, there were some outstanding achievements to be celebrated. As we say goodbye to 2021, we take a look back at the biggest moments for each Porsche model in the past year. As fun as it is to look back, we also want to take a glimpse into the future. So, for each model we will list one prediction or expectation that we have for 2022.

The below is model line specific and does not delve into company news overall. Including those items would take this from a six-page article to a small novel. Porsche as a company is very active and trying to capture everything here is not what this is about. So, while there were certainly other newsworthy items this list is all about the cars and SUVs. Grab a cup of hot cocoa and let’s look back on 2021.

718 Models

1. Cayman GT4 RS

GT4 RS

This might be the biggest news of all this year. Porsche has finally given the Cayman platform the engine from the GT3. 493 horsepower from a naturally aspirated flat six that spins up to 9,000 rpm. That is the heart of the beast but there is also a slew of suspension and aero upgrades that come with it. This PDK-only sportscar is peak 718. It is the biggest 718 story of the year, and it is not even close. The only trick now is being able to actually get one.

2. Boxster 25 Years

Boxster 25 years

Time flies when you are driving one of the best roadsters on the planet. The Boxster turns 25 and Porsche celebrated with a special Boxster 25 years edition. It is powered by the 4.0-liter six-cylinder boxer engine out of the GTS. That is a special engine, but what is more special about this car is its looks. It is designed to pay homage to the original Boxster concept that made its debut in 1993.

3. New Colors

Shark Blue

It is not unusual for cars to pick up some new colors for the new model year. But the 718 lineup got a couple of stunners this year. First seen on the amazing 911 GT3 Shark Blue is now available on the 718. And another new color is Frozen Berry. To us non-art majors that means it is pink. Or at least close to pink. It is a bold color choice for sure. In a world of black, white and silver sports cars it is refreshing to see Porsche offer some colors with a bit of pop.

718 Prediction

In the easiest prediction ever, we are looking for the formal announcement and maybe some specs on the EV switchover for the 718 range. The cars are a few years off, but we know they are coming. It would be great if in 2022 we got a little bit clearer view of what the future of the 718 range is going to look like.

Joe has been obsessed with cars since he got his very first Matchbox toy in the ‘70s. In 2003, he found a new obsession in track days that led to obtaining his SCCA competition license in 2015. In 2019, he became a certified driving instructor for the National Auto Sport Association. His love for all things four wheels has never wavered, whether it's driving some of the best cars in the world on the racetrack, tackling 2,000-mile road trips in 2-seat sports cars or being winched off the side of a mountaintop in a Jeep. Writing for the suite of Internet Brands Auto Communities sites, including Rennlist.com, Ford Truck Enthusiasts, 6 Speed and more allows him to share that knowledge and passion with others.
