2017-Porsche 911

We Get a Smaller Engine with a Little More Horsepower and lot More Torque. Plus, there’s a New Targa and More Surprises

Porsche has slowly been rolling out a family of new 3.0L turbocharged engines for its 911 range of machines. This week, we have finally fleshed out the whole lineup. At the Detroit Auto Show the boys and gals from Stuttgart launched the refreshed 911 GTS in five flavors. We have Coupe and Cabriolet models in both RWD and AWD variants, as well as a new Targa.

For this new GTS, Porsche has cranked up the power from its 3.0L turbocharged flat-six engine even further. It pushes it to 450 horsepower and 405 lb-ft of torque. That is a nice boost of 30 ponies and 37 pounds of twist over the current 911 S. Compared to the last 911 GTS however that is a bump of 20 horsepower and a whopping 80 lb-ft of delicious, meaty, mid-range torque.

The result is a new 911 that will hit the 60 mph in as little as 3.4 seconds and it will carry on accelerating well past that mark to 193 mph. For reference, the 911 S is quoted at 4.1 seconds to 60 with a 191 mph top speed.

So just as expected, the new 911 GTS is faster and more powerful than ever before.

To visually differentiate the new go-faster 911 from the rest of the family, Porsche has made some changes to the equipment list. There is a new Sport Design nose with black lip accent, 20-inch center-lock wheels painted satin black, tinted rear lights, and new black trim piece on the rear. The GTS logos are also black. Along with these changes, the GTS comes standard with the Sport Design mirrors and the Sports Exhuast package, with black tips or course. If you get the Targa model, you also get a black painted Targa bar.

In case you can’t tell, black is the theme here for the visual enhancements.

All in all, the changes and upgrades for the GTS are predictable, but welcomed. The boost in torque should make the GTS feel faster in everyday scenarios. Also, the new look adds a touch of aggression to the otherwise soft shape of the 911. Pricing starts at just $119,000 for the GTS coupe and moves up from there. Porsche is currently taking orders and planning to start delivering in the U.S. in April.
