Porsche Building an Electric 928 Successor Is Risky Business
Transportation designer creates a design study showing what a modern 928 from Porsche could look like.
The Porsche 928 was designed to replace the venerable 911. Thankfully, that never happened, however, the 928 was not exactly a flop. In fact, with a model run that extended 18 years, and a turn as one of the most iconic movie cars, it can be considered a hit. While their values may not have skyrocketed in the way that some of the 911 models have, there are some 928 models such as a GTS with a manual transmission that are worth a pretty penny. The 928 continues to hold a special place in the Porsche enthusiasts’ heart.
That 928 love has led to numerous rumors over the years that Porsche would bring back the grand touring coupe. Heck, Porsche already makes an SUV coupe, so would a traditional two-door flagship cruiser really be such a far-fetched idea? Porsche has not officially made any announcement regarding such a vehicle, but they have hinted at a Panamera-based coupe, so it is possible. If it does happen, what would a current day 928 look like?
Here, we have a 928 take that transportation designer John Mark Vicente has created. He calls his design study the 929. This design has a clear link to the current Taycan as well as elements from the 911.
Of course, no fantasy design study would be complete without a bit a whimsy, so a pair of gullwing doors are also included on this 929. What does not seem to be included is any sort of exhaust. Chances are this will not be a front-engine V8 Porsche, and the concept seems to point to an electric vehicle.
An electric vehicle makes sense for the spiritual successor to the 928. Back in the day, the 928 was supposed to be the path forward, the new direction for Porsche that was going to supplant the 911. An electric vehicle would be the equivalent today. Future technology, and the path forward. This time around, Porsche knows better than to try to replace the 911. They can focus on this being a halo grand tourer without concern for trying to replace anything.
Many argue that the ever expanding 911 has grown from pure sports car into a grand tourer and perhaps a car such as this 929 concept would be superfluous. However, the 911 is not electric, and probably will not be for quite some time, so the 929 would have that distinction if nothing else. Porsche has a current lineup of remarkable cars and SUVs and we are sure that if they decided to build a car like the 929, that it would be another slice of automotive triumph. However, any new car launch comes with some inherent risk, so would Porsche be willing to roll the dice?
Will Porsche ever make a car like this? That remains to be seen. Knowing Porsche does not exactly do flamboyant, you can say goodbye to the thought of gullwing doors, but the rest of the 929 concept seems to make sense. Then again, if they dropped an old school 5.4-liter, 32-valve V8 in the nose and hooked it up to a manual transmission, they would probably have a waiting list a mile long.
