The Porsche 918 is the Fastest of The Holy Trinity

Automakers are interesting to work with. In order to review many of the cars journalists review, they have to get loaners from the manufacturers. In some cases, those manufacturers set rules about what the journalist can and can’t do with the vehicle while it is in their possession. This has never been more clear than when Top Gear, and now The Grand Tour, tried to get the Porsche 918, McLaren P1, and the Ferrari LaFerrari together to see which is faster.

After what seemed like decades, Clarkson, Hammond and May’s new series on Amazon Prime finally was able to get the 3 cars together on a racetrack where they could set a lap time. Seeing as it might be the only chance to get these cars together, The Grand Tour made every effort to make the test as fair as possible.

The battle takes place at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in Portugal. Jérôme d’Ambrosio is the professional racing driving tackling all three cars. Also, all three of the cars are on an aggressive road tire similar to that on what you get stock from Porsche and Ferrari. However, the stock tire on the P1 is a more track-focused tire, and was replaced with a tire similar to the other cars. This was all to make it fair.

After lapping the course the times were tallied…

While barely beating the LaFerrari, the Porsche 918 absolutely creamed the McLaren P1 around the circuit. Clarkson goes on to whine that his car — the P1 — didn’t win because it didn’t have the aggressive stock tires on. But fair is fair.

If you haven’t seen the episode yet, you should check it out. It’s a lot like old Top Gear, which is a very good thing.
